Interesting idea, I'm gonna go for it and see what happens. I'm thinking of doing a single cake mono with some coir and verm, so if it contams before full colonization I can just pitch the whole micro-tub. Should I dunk the cake for a while before I spawn it? Is that even necessary when spawning to a mono?
EDIT: Never mind, found the answer to that with a bit of searching. Since the bulk is going to be hydrated to field capacity, dunking the cake would throw off the moisture balance. A lot of people say that BRF colonizes the bulk faster without a dunk. If the moisture of the bulk is higher than the moisture in the spawn, then I would imagine that the mycel would be more inclined to move to the bulk and colonize it.

Certain species of mushrooms will only thrive as long as there's a type of bacteria present. I have been speculating that as well gyo, as of late. We have no clue just how much certain bacteria and microbes benefit cubes.. IMO it seems like they benefit quite a bit.

I thought it was well accepted that certain bacteria, bad bacteria I mean, speeds up fruiting/colonizing. Not because it "helps" but because the myc is like, fuck, this is bad, time to hurry up.

Well I'm talking about a fully colonized tub that I consolidated until knots and then fruited. If I get a tub that doesn't even colonize the top layer of coir and fruits I know its bad.
When I'm talking about benefiting the myc I'm talking about tubs I've observed with known bacteria outcolonize their peers from the same master but a different round of g2g.
In this case it fruited twice heavy and then I saw trich. In other cases it fruits once heavily and then dead spots occur that generally start to contam over time. My fully colonized, clean tubs always outperform in the long run but the first two flushes of slightly bacterial spawn are enough to fill a gallon and two quart Ziploc bag and I use 27qt monos and 3 qts.
If I took some of these cultures further I'd need a warehouse

okay so I've sterilized all my jars (hopefully it worked well). where should I inoculate? I don't have a glovebox but I do have a large tote I was gonna turn sideways to shield from wind. was gonna use a bic lighter to sterilize the syringe before each jar and I also have rubbing alcohol and latex gloves. would a kitchen counter be a good spot or is the kitchen too filled with contams? I imagine my bedroom and bathroom would also have a lot.. and so would doing it outside. I've got a small luggage room connected to the bathroom (separated by a door). it would be tight in the air but would that be a good spot? I heard about people spraying 10% bleach solutions in rooms.. would that ruin the walls, paint, etc.? how do I put the syringe together without accidentally contaminating it?

I read somewhere a SAB isn't that important, and I need that tote for my FC. I also don't have tools to cut proper armholes

You would have a couple weeks while it colonized to save up 4 bucks for a new tote. You can be careful and use a knife, or heat up a metal can on the stove or something to cut the holes.

SAB is super important
I couldn't grow mushrooms as well as I do without it. For PF cakes I just inoculate open air. That's a bad practice though if you actually want success with them. I'd prop up a box somewhere, spray it down real good and at least do the inoculation in a semi-sealed environment.
Make sure to watch the mushroom vidoes DIRECTLY BEFORE you inoculate. this will keep you from making any stupid mistakes.
Worth noting I agree with ND, you should just make one because you're gonna need it.

Many have had success by properly cleaning the area and tote, and leaving it hanging over the edge of a table (enough for your arms to fit under the lip), and get to work. Of course, your posture/positioning this way will give you FLBP

jk I'm an idiot. But not about the SAB. Please use some sort of SAB! I'm begging you to wait until you can.

too late lol I already inoculated without a SAB. the plastic seems to have been too thick to make any holes in so I just wiped it down well with alcohol, sprayed it with water, and put it on its side. I also cleaned the table and gloves and took a brief shower right beforehand. I throughly flame-sterilized the needle between jars and worked as quickly as I could without moving the jars around too much. I then cleaned the spot on my closet shelf with alcohol as well and sat the jars there carefully

two things: I noticed several of the jars were kinda damp on the spots where the tape is covering the inoculation holes. I'm thinking it's either condensation or the water from the pot boiled too hard and bipassed the aluminum cover. should I be concerned? and the other thing.. I forgot to mark the holes on the one with the tyvek on the lid so I ended up having to do an open-lid inoculation with it since having to take the gloves off to feel the holes and mark them while I was in the middle of inoculating my jars would've been way too much of a hassle. would the fact I had to open the lid for about 5-10 seconds be enough to introduce contams? I also accidentally pushed down too hard on the syringe on that jar and ended up injecting a whole cc in just one spot. it would still colonize well, right?

Man I'm starting to get a little impatient waiting for these tubs to knot up. This is always the most exciting part. Got 3 more spawn bags in the PC with an hour to go. 2 of the bags are getting a pint of a cambo pin clone and one is getting a PE pin clone. I think starting with an invitro pin should cut down on potential blobbing. I didn't really give this clone a chance to sector, either. The cambo is from a culture where the whole plate gets covered in pins, so that will be fun too.

I went with Doc_T's mini mono tub design, aka the "shotgun-mono hybrid" tub. The hardest part was scaling down the bulk sub recipe for a single 1/2 pint cake, lol, but I think I got the proportions about right.
I have a quick question though, maybe one of you guys can help me out? What's the point in covering my tub with a black bag during the colonization period? It seems unusual, when I was doing my BRF jars I was told not to worry about ambient light during colonization, and that the gas exchange from the jars should be unrestricted. Is the black bag more of a moisture barrier in this case, to keep my tub from drying out? Should I have wrapped the tub tightly so that no air can enter or escape? That didn't seem right to me, so I only covered the tub loosely, keeping the end of the bag loose so that the gases can enter and leave freely.
