Wild Oyster in November!
    #22503764 - 11/10/15 07:02 AM (8 years, 2 months ago)

I found this oyster growing out of an exposed tree root while I was hiking with the family last night!  It has been crazy cold at night and in the morning,  I wouldn't expect to find any mushrooms this long after first frost.  Although it most certainly has seen better days.  I am going to attempt to clone it.

Looking good.
As long as the temperature is above freezing you can find oysters.
I've found them in january in new york. It had been cold and snowing, we got two days above 45 degrees, snow melted, oysters grew! 2 days later it was snowing again.

Oysters are amazing. I have found them here in Nebraska in January, frozen, and covered with ice. I picked them and put them in some hot chicken broth because I was camping. Delicious!

I love winter backpacking.  I go to the Delaware Water Gap at least once a year when it snows

Could you please describe your cloning process?

I just took a couple samples of living tissue from inside the base of the stem and up at the center of the cap.  I placed the samples in a jar containing 50/50 coffee/sawdust mix (pasteurized). This is really my first ever experiment with mushrooms period.  Therefore I know I have probably made a bunch of mistakes and could use plenty of advice.  I'm just attempting to learn both on here and by trial and error.

Without sterilizing you will probably get plenty of contamination, especially with all that coffee in there. Look up Lipa's Pasteurized Fuel Pellet Tek. You may have a better chance with that, but sterilization is almost a must for using coffee.

But with an oyster, you just may get fruits too. Those guys'll eat anything!

I've had a compost bin that had oyster stem butts in it get colonized and fruit. On a substrate of coffee, egg shells and rotting vegetables.

I read that,  plan on using it too.  With these I just boiled the grains and sawdust then let sit in strainer lined with coffee filters. Which reminds me that the filters are ripped up in there too.

That is what seems to be the word with oysters,  that's why I am using them as a jumping off point. I have always loved eating mushrooms,  but just recently took up an interest in cultivation. I'm on this site all day reading now while I'm at "work".

You're absolutely right! Just don't open the jar in your house unless you want mold spores everywhere if it does contaminate. It's not just oysters that will fruit on contaminated substrate. I have had many good lion's mane flushes on contaminated sawdust bags that I put outside.

Reason I ask is I was wondering if it was possibly Pannelus serotinus
Appearing sometimes singularly, in late fall...

This did appear singularly,  but from what I see online,  I doubt it is.  I have seem a lot of oysters,  due to they grow abundantly around here. But assume I will do a proper I'd on it once I have produced a fruit body.
