Cool, a comment to that article recommended this book which I just put on hold on the library. http://www.amazon.com/The-Righteous-Mind-Politics-Religion/dp/0307455777
Also see Stoicism.

if we were having a serious conversation about this topic - which, by the way, i don't think we are in the least - we would do well to parse out what kids are actually "whining" about.  even though we have made progress on certain issues, we still live in a society in which inequality persists in myriad ways for myriad people, including middle aged white males without a college education (or less), whose mortality rates have risen over twenty percent since 1999 for reasons that nobody seems to agree on other than that shit is pretty fucked up right now. if we were to take a step back from our long held positions and tired, empty rhetoric, we may see that at the core of all this "whining" are valid grievances against a society that hates its youth.

it's not that i endorse these radicalized ideologies. but i certainly understand what's behind them. and none of it follows from participation trophies, laziness or "entitlement". our kids are about to have some real problems on their hands e.g. income inequality via wage stagnation, an utterly broken democracy, an impending environmental crisis, a looming and possibly dramatic escalation of our wars etc. i can see why anyone would look at the way things are now and want to throw themselves down the rabbit hole of feminism, anti-feminism, hyper-religiosity, or extreme left or right wing politics. it's all too much. and that's just how those in power want it: an atomized society allows for all of the aforementioned problems to exist.

so what i propose is trying to learn from people we disagree with. that's the approach i always at least try to take. even if i disagree with someone, that doesn't mean i can't learn from them. and if we can learn from each other, perhaps we can find enough common ground to just let our disagreements stand. i don't require everyone to share my views of what the good life is. but sooner or later we are all going to have to come together on the inescapable realities of what's happening or we're just not going to have a world.

Meanwhile, in Alabama...

You compared me to the retards causing all of this nonsense, your firmly anchored in delusion.

your behaviors as far as what she did and how you commented on it carry different values. but you are both equally wrong in demonizing the other side instead of trying to understand their point of view. there is a way to be critical of someone's behavior while trying to understand where they're coming from. dismissing them entirely by basically calling them overly sensitive pussies doesn't seem to resolve anything.

He's right in a way. Do you not see how deluded some of the people here are? Half are probably still in their mother's basement. Look at all the virginity threads in SA or S&R. Life experience is extremely valuable which is why people should at least listen to their elders whether they agree/believe them or not. You don't have to insult the man; he clearly has good intentions when he speaks. Mostly.

Oh, no I wasn't saying anything about who's right or wrong.

I was just picturing zappa sitting at his computer all proud of himself. "I provide tremendous educational value derpdy derpdy derp."

Probably because he does. Whether he's wrong or right or accepted and loved whatever. He's forgotten more things than most posters here know. I'm not white knighting his cock, but there's no reason to disrespect and publicly attempt to insult him.

okay, so here you're claiming that my premise that we haven't had any social progress is false. so here i'm going to point out to you that the civil rights movements for minorities and women have both given rise to laws that have made things better for those groups. you also seem to be conflating the issue of police brutality with the issue we're discussing, which is beside the point, so i'm just going to ignore those irrelevant claims.

has it made things better for those groups? at what cost has this so called progress come about

Yeah maybe he does, but the mental image was a hoot n' a hollar.

I was just obnoxiously running my mouth, and if anyone understands that it's zappa.

It's under control Dys, thanks.

Oh, I know you were just tickling his balls, but a lot of people seem to have this notion he's being a dick to be a dick, when in the end it's their lack of life experience or education.

Has shit got a lot worse in the past 6 years or something? I was university then and did not really experience this stuff. Administration had that attitude but most students I met weren't psycho PC social justice warriors. I've always read about crap like this from the internet and can't help but wonder if people with these attitudes are an outspoken minority or if there really are a ton of people that are that libtarded.

I don't know. People are stupid. The email in the youtube video you posted suggested that white people don't paint their face black. Which should be common sense but it isn't. I think we should be addressing why "kids these days" are stupid and not "whiny babies".

Lack of consideration has been a problem for a long time. There is absolutely nothing wrong with teaching kids to be considerate. The problem is we suck at teaching it because we also teach our kids that they can "be anything they want to be" and then also push them into colleges in hopes they'll make more money.

Maybe the real problem is the parents are stupid. Maybe it's just a progression of stupidity that leads to generations of people who thinks it's okay to take selfies with bears.
