Hi all. Living in the Pacific Northwest US, many pastures around. Picked quite a bit in the past but it's been awhile and I always like a second opinion anyways. Went on the search for some Liberty Caps in a local cow field, wet and frosty night after a few days of rain. Found about 20 before I gave up from being wet and cold, plus it wasn't as abundant as past excursions. This collection is quite brown right now but I'm hoping someone can give some insight based on the pictures I'll provide.
Thanks for any help.

Yes, looks like mostly P. papilionaceus. You're looking in the right habitat though, but look harder and be patient, you'll find them eventually.

Now just look in the same area for those with white to whitish stipes you can usually wrap around your finger and caps that are super rubbery with a slippery surface (when they have dried off and begun to fade yet), or which are drying to a pale straw color.
You'll know you're on the right track when the fresh, not yet drying ones have a separable pellicle and gills which become purplish in the more mature specimens, from which you can obtain a purple spore print. They will often but not always bruise blue in the stope and along the cap, especially as they begin to dry out, e.g. where they are laid on a surface.
--------------------
Attn PWN hunters: If you should come across a bluing Psilocybe matching P. pellicolusa please smell it. If you detect a scent reminiscent of Anethole (anise) please preserve a specimen or two for study and please PM me.

Also I don't know how common it is but when I used to pluck them out of the ground with bits of mycelium still on the bottom of the stem, the mycelium was sometimes blue in parts. I don't think it's reliable though.
