Popping the Flow Cherry: Cleaning HEPA Filter.

Got a screaming deal on a used flow hood. First time having one so I need some tips.
Some people say to change the filter on used hoods, others say they last for like 10 years. What are the thoughts on this? I don't have money for a new 1 so cleaning advice would be cool...or maybe its not necessary?

Dude, don't do anything to the filter. Just clean the framing and table top. I bought my big hood used and tore it apart to put a new filter in, but decided to try it first. My filter is 36 years old!! Has a date of oct 79 on it. Works beautifully. Pour some plates in front of it. In a few days you'll know if you need a new filter. I'm betting no. Congrats man. You're going to love it!!

hey azur man, once upon a time I remember you saying that pasteurizing in jars was much better than pasteurizing in something like a pillow case. Can you clarify this for me please? I want to start huge oyster grows soon and need an efficient method for pasteurizing straw.

I was referring to hpoo when i said that. With straw, go big. Wire basket in a 55 gallon drum or a mesh laundry bag in a pot. Pillow case would not let the water drain efficiently.

cool! I'm was thinking of buying a single propane burner, then I was like nah, I'll just get a bbq with a side burner, more bang for my buck. Do you see any problem with that other than maybe lower BTUs, slightly less efficient? I'm lookin at moving my operations mostly outdoors cuz I'm shacked up now and nobody likes post spawn kitchens.

and btw, have you ever found it advantageous to rinse straw prior to pasturization? (one day I will learn to spell that properly)

I'd get this
http://m.acehardware.com//product/index.jsp?productId=1291454&KPID=997068&pla=pla_997068
Or the double burner version. Make sure you get this type though, as it can handle a lot of weight. There are wimpier versions that can't hold much. I've never rinsed straw. BL may have more imput on that...

i never have rinsed it, but if the bale was stored poorly and u see more dirt than u think u should, u could. if u do the mesh bag or metal screen, no need to rinse though, as the dirt particles will just fall to the bottom and u will be lifting the straw out.
azur is more familiar with propane burners than i am, so i'd go with his suggestion.
