a magical negro gerbil of mine is innocing tommorrow morning as well. No need to seal up needle holes. That's what the dry verm layer is for, keeping contams from entering at the top of the jar and working its way down the substrate.

seal the hole with electrical tape, or us a polyfill filter.

check out the wonders of polyfill here....www.fungifun.org/polyfill

My pet frog didn't put the tape back on after inoculation, it's not necessary if you have the dry vermiculite covering the top of the jars. Right now all cakes have nice, strong mycellium and are fruiting rather well.

yarry do yourself a favor and get that tape off as soon as possible.. when i uncovered the innoc holes on my jars, colonization speed multiplied 10 times easy...

one of my jars that i used as an experiment i completely uncovered which i was able to do because i had a 1/2 inch dry vermiculite layer to keep out contams... worked 100% no contams NO cover on the jar at all

im not recommending you take off the covers because it is risky but i am recommending u let your babies breath and free up the innoc holes..

but then again ull only notice a difference in grow speed if u leave the covers on for a few days and then take em off.. u live and u learn, do what ya want

all i have to say, is that the dry verm layer is not perfectly effective against contams getting into your cake. the best most cost effective way that i have found to get around the whole covering of the holes with electrical tape, is to put alluminium foil over the jar...you can take it off to innoc and then replace it...the foil will keep anything from falling into your jars...and trust me a dry verm layer IS NOT 100% effective, especially when you start to invert your jars for better air exchange...when you invert the cake will typically slide down towards the lid creating a vacume and sucking in the surrounding air...a dry verm layer isn't going to do much to prevent this.

Nope.

Penalties against drug use should not be more damaging to an individual than the use of the drug itself. Nowhere is this more clear than in the laws against the possession of marijuana and mushrooms in private for personal use.

The fact is, with the tape on or off the myc will grow fine. If you have many problems with contams in you incubation container my advice would be to leave the tape on. If you have done half pints before then you know about where the growth should be at a certain day after inoculation. If you see it slow down pull the tape off.

Hi,
I worried about this too....tape on, tape off? My best guess so far was putting thin masking tape over the holes with the theory that maybe air could get out if it needed some room to breath. So far so good. That was just my conclusion to this same question...but I'm a first time grower so I don't really know.

if you have a good layer of verm and you wipped the sides before you put that layer of verm in you dont want that tape. If you are really conserned take the tape off and put a coffee filter on top of it with a rubberband or tape

uh that vacume is only caused by inverting your cakes to make growth faster... but if u dont do that but leave the tape off ull get faster growth speed..

and if you still want to hit the cakes for some breathing room u can always wipe a piece of foil down with isoprophyl and put it over ur nearly developed cake or use polyfil or some kind of filter..
