was 2015 a really big year for new members? Just seems these days like half the posts are from people that just joined. Don't have anything against em -I'm a noob myself- but just curious if anyone else notices this

Sheekle - I'm only 22 haha until recently I never cared to learn my history. The more you know!
Ezuma - Yea, I started as a lurker deep in the depths of the Psychedelic Experience. When I actually joined last spring it was a big difference going from Chinacat's thumbprint stories to randos posting in the pub. If you visit the forum for a month you get a feel for discerning who's been there a while

Many places in the world you can walk in a bar and find 16 year olds legally drinking. Politicians decided it was much safer for kids to drink in places with no bartender to cut them off and no bouncer to make sure they weren't being carried away to a gang rape. Thank Mothers against drunk driving, the cunts who enjoy seeing your rights taken away.

one thing i noticed in Prague, where drinking laws are not much enforced, is that they actually handle their shit. In Canada drinking culture is awful, and you have piss drunk dumbfucks stumbling all over at night and dumb ass kids getting their stomachs pumped. Contrast that to Prague, where there's alcohol everywhere, folks drinking in public and at all hours, and its mostly fine the damn taboo around it just makes it worse

no, that's not it at all, they decided it was better to have the 18-20 crowd asking people outside of liquor store asking old men to buy them booze and then driving around while drinking since their parents would flip shit if they came home with the illegally obtained booze so they extorted the states to raise the drinking age by withholding federal road funds
and for some reason people still think we need the feds involved in state affairs

It's a pretty bullshit concept. The US has the highest minimum drinking age in the world.

No, it isn't.
US Military base commanders can change the drinking age to that of a country/state within 50 miles of the installation if they want, otherwise it must follow the country/state it is located in.

there has been much volatility in the states' drinking ages since the repeal of Prohibition in 1933. Shortly after the ratification of the 21st amendment in December, most states set their purchase ages at 21 since that was the age of majority at the time, but a few set their limits lower. Most of these limits remained constant until the early 1970s. From 1969 to 1976, some 30 states lowered their purchase ages, generally to 18. This was primarily because the voting age was lowered from 21 to 18 in 1971 with the 26th amendment, and nearly all states lowered their ages of majority as well. Twelve states kept their purchase ages at 21 since repeal of Prohibition and never changed them. Most of the age lowering occurred in 1972 or 1973.
From 1976 to 1983, several states voluntarily raised their purchase ages to 19 (or, less commonly, 20 or 21), in part to combat drunk driving fatalities. In 1984, Congress passed the National Minimum Drinking Age Act, which required states to raise their ages for purchase and public possession to 21 by October 1986 or lose 10% of their federal highway funds. By mid-1988, all 50 states and the District of Columbia had raised their purchase ages to 21 (but not Puerto Rico, Guam, or the Virgin Islands, see Additional Notes below). South Dakota and Wyoming were the final two states to comply with the age 21 mandate. The current drinking age of 21 remains a point of contention among many Americans, not least because of it being higher than the age of majority (18 in most states) and higher than the drinking ages of most other countries. The National Minimum Drinking Age Act is also seen as a congressional sidestep of the tenth amendment. Although debates have not been highly publicized, a few states have proposed legislation to lower their drinking age, while Guam has raised its drinking age to 21 in July 2010.

In Germany it's 16 years old for beer and wine, and 18 for spirits.

My parents had a weird thing about us drinking out on country roads and insisted it be done in the basement instead and everyone had to hand over car keys first. I understand people rarely do that anymore for fear of getting sued. To me it's amazing no one is even talking about changing laws. Here they have bush parties or field parties with no supervision and people getting stabbed and rapes and all that good stuff. This clearly a case of the prohibition doing way more harm than good. I think there should be licensed clubs for teenagers only. I haven't had one of those kids outside the beer store ask me in ages

I was six months from my 18th birthday when the drinking age in DC was raised to 21. If you were already 18 when the limit was raised, you were grandfathered in. Essentially, kids a few months older than me could drink (more importantly, get into bars) three years before I could. Didn't really matter, I ended up in Montreal where there age is 18 anyways.

DC was one of the last, if not the last jurisdiction to change. The way the mandate worked, the Feds withheld highway funds. Well... DC doesn't get appropriations like the states, and there's only about 10 miles of actual highways. Additional, the city got a lot of revenue from the bars, especially drawing the younger crowds that couldn't drink in MD or VA. It took some suburban kid to wipe out a family on the beltway after drinking in DC to finally push the council to change the age.
Quote:
We dug up some old articles from The Washington Post following the D.C. Council’s vote on the issue. Below is one from September 23rd, 1986. D.C. Council members, in a flurry of activity after the weekend deaths of three young persons in an alcohol-related automobile accident, gathered enough support yesterday for raising the District’s minimum drinking age to 21 to force a vote on the issue at tonight’s meeting. The proposal, long opposed by D.C. officials despite local and national pressure, had not been scheduled for a vote because council members who backed the bill were convinced they lacked the nince votes necessary to adopt emergency legislation. But the Sunday morning deaths of three young persons in a suburban Maryland accident after a reported night of partying in Georgetown helped to change the minds of at least three council members. The following day, the following article detailed the outcome of the vote.
The D.C. Council, bowing to longtime pressure from Congress and the recent support of Mayor Marion Barry, voted last night to raise the District’s drinking age to 21 for all types of alcohol but to continue to allow persons who are 18 by the end of this month to buy beer and wine. The city will become one of the last jurisdictions in the country to increase its drinking age to 21. Under the threatened loss of federal highway funds, all but seven states now have adopted a 21-year-old minimum, according to federal officials. Members of Congress and officials in Maryland and Virginia, which already have raised their drinking age, have argued that the District had become a magnet for young persons throughout the area who come to the city to drink and then drive home drunk. …
