I've been using windows 10 (as well as various linux distros) since I was first due for an upgrade.
I gotta say, it is quite a convenient OS... I love being able to find any app or program on my computer super easily using cortana search, and microsoft edge is a decent browser as well.
Also cortana is pretty funny to chat too.

this is how they'll do it, they'll learn all about you through your search histories, they'll learn the thing you like, what you like to eat, learn about your parents and friends, you'll willingly give them the information that they need to hunt you down and kill you and you will be one of the first to be wiped out.

It steals your bandwidth to send other users updates.
There are many other reasons why I will Never use windows ten.

Yeah but Windows 8 was garbage.. so that's not saying too much. Almost anything would have been better than Windows 8. It does seem better but I've seen enough reasons to dislike it that I haven't installed it and probably won't.

I can't wait, but trust me, I'm so random and ADD that my search histories would likely result in "does not compute".

You can turn these off along with a ton of other privacy settings if you just go through the system app thoroughly

Not everything can be turned off (or doesn't truly turn off) and no matter what you do Microsoft collects your information. People that don't want to be spied on won't use Windows 10. They'll use an OS like one of the Linux distros.
Windows 10 marks the beginning of the end for privacy. The easiest way for you to be profiled is for you to willingly give up your own information.
Also, fuck Google and their browser. Fuck FB too. Privacy advocates don't support that scum.

This is exactly why I haven't and don't think I will upgrade, I'm switching to Mint, but I figured I'd run it in a VM because I have some software that I'd probably need/want windows for in order to run in confidence.

Well good on you! Mint is an excellent distro. One of my absolute favorites. I wish it was more popular. I'm assuming by VM you mean "Virtual Machine (Mode)", as in you'll run it inside of your Windows platform. That's perfectly fine to do, but it eats up a lot of system resources (despite Linux running light) to have two OS working at once (Windows is a super fatty to begin with). You'd actually be better off running Mint as a dual-boot option if you're advanced enough to be able to set that up. Just make sure that Mint (or any Linux distro.) is installed AFTER Windows and that you partition your hdd so you have adequate space to run what you want. Dual-boot systems are extremely versatile and rewarding to use.

I thought about dual booting to. Never have before, new to linux in general, but I'm pretty confident I can figure it out, I started going down that route, but I noticed that VMware lets you try their products for free and figured I might as well try out a VM first and see how it goes before I slice and dice my HDD up. Thanks for the tips though, always appreciated.

I still use 7 and have no desire to upgrade to 10.
I dual boot Ubuntu because when I got the laptop I was too lazy to properly configure Arch but I never use it.
