I've really only listened to Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, but it's a great album.

I like Wilco. The first album is OK but a couple tracks like "Box Full of Letters" and "Passenger Side" are real good. The next two releases, "Being There" and "Summerteeth" are IMO borderline masterpieces. Then they went experimental with "Yankee Hotel Foxtrot" and the next one that I also bought but can't remember the name of. I liked parts of those but not as much as the 2nd and 3rd. Since then I haven't had the time or money, but from what I read they went back to alt. country and some experimental. I have a real good live bootleg of Jeff Tweedy solo, where he does Wilco songs and a little Uncle Tupelo and that stuff they did with Billy Bragg where all the songs were written by Woody Guthrie.

I really enjoy their music and I can always groove to it, but I feel like the lyrics are often completely meaningless and so it's hard to feel attached to any of their songs. The new 'Tweedy' album has more meaningful lyrics, but I like Wilco's music better.

Yes, I like the band Wilco. They're definitely older than I expected as I first started listening to them.

Wilco has that quality like velvet underground, where they write a nice sweet melodic song and out of nowhere casually mention killing somebody or sticking a needle in their arm. He's very good at contrast.

I always feel like the first release, A.M., is severely underrated. I agree that the following albums are much more creative, however I think what A.M. did for the alt country scene was huge

Yes, very much. Being There is fantastic. The new one, Star Wars, is pretty good. Yankee Foxtrot Hotel is really good, and there's a great documentary on it.
Also they did some albums with Billy Bragg, doing Woody Guthrie songs, really awesome. Called Mermaid Avenue (Vols 1-3).
For newbie, start with any of these and see if you catch on
