The machine prints on a roll of tape, that is cut off at the required length. Brother is a major company - I would imagine they will support the equipment they sell in the foreseeable future.

If you look from top to bottom of the plant - you see the leaves are red when they first appear - then they go yellow, then a variegated yellow/light green - then the older ones go a darker green. The only genus of cacti with true, permanent leaves. And not succulent.

Yeah its a beauty for sure. So how tender do new offshoots get? Could you graft to it or is that out of the question?

I have taken a few cuttings from it which produce roots very easily and quickly in a jar of water. I think it is far too thin to use as grafting stock - and not at all succulent, unlike most cacti.

The Ariocarpus show 2016 is finally underway.

Kicking off is A. bravoanus ssp hintonii. This was initially a single plant that grew a second head two years ago.

A discovery today - underneath my venerable Leuchtenbergia principis, I found lurking a couple of Astrophytum sprouts. Both with, at the moment, four ribs, and denuded of flecks. Just like the single var. nudum var. quadricostata that has been throwing its genes about lately. I think I will leave them there now until March.
Amazing how these seeds find their way just about anywhere and germinate.

Couple of pics today -

A fruit splits open on my Astrophytum coahuilense

And an unexpected clutch of sprouts on a Epithelantha micromeris - a non-active but self-fertile species. Those babes are up for grabs if anyone wants them for free.
What did you just say ferrel? LOL

Yeah i think im over thinking the whole seed thing here. Maybe i should let the ants keep them. I havent had any unknown sprouts but one. One that i believe is Mammillaria theresae.
Good stuff old man.

Been trying a variation of grafting this year. We are told that the stock should be young tissue, actively growing. I wanted another grafted example of Toumeya papyracantha, which is difficult on its own roots, so I grafted a tip onto a pup of Myrtillocactus geometrizans - which certainly fits the criteria.

After two weeks there was clearly some growth, and the scion was well attached.

EDIT : some 4 weeks further on - more growth on the scion.

I definitely declare this graft a success.

Now I´m having a similar attempt on a pup - plenty of these blue Myrtle pups from earlier failed grafting attempts. And the scion is a Lophophora williamsii - got stacks of those, my adults produce them in profusion.

I attached the scion with some plumbers´ PTFE tape - read about that on a Facebook group - it was so easy to apply, will do that one again. So we will see how it goes. A back to back success would be a real record breaker.

Thanks, ferrel- I have been a pretty poor failure at grafting before now - hopefully this technique may help me improve.
