One of my Pelecyphora aselliformis has produced a small flower - but I can never seem to synchronise the two plants.

I also have a cristate form of this species that has never done the business, though.

I think Zed has had the same problem with his 2 aselliformis. One flowers and the other does not. Maybe later on in the season.
Beautiful flower man.

I would love to talk to Zed about our common problems. But he doesn´t respond to any of my comments. Never mind - lots of other good people here to chat to.

Spanishfly said: Some new arrivals, from a nursery in Germany. They all arrived in good shape, with spines in good order, but were all totally pot-bound in the tiniest plastic pots. First job was a complete repot into terracotta pots and my standard Mexican desert cactus mix.

They are - Turbinicarpus schwarzii, Epithelantha micromeris - that one has a pup, I think unusual for this species - and was a freebie from the supplier. Thelocactus lausseri, Turbinicarpus pseudopectinatus, and Aztekium ritteri - that last a tiny (but expensive) specimen on its own roots. Maybe I am being a bit optimistic buying that at my age.
Although from a professional nursery, they will still be going into quarantine for a while just to ensure no pests are around. And they will be gently acclimated to the brighter sun they will be getting.
Following on from the above, I am so pleased to find that the Turbinicarpus schwarziihas flowered already - and I didn´t regard it as acclimated yet.

I have decided to be less lazy and take the trouble to post more pics - I have missed some good flowers lately.
Anyway, flowering today there is

Stenocactus pentacanthus - a single flower pushing its way through some fearsome spines.

Encephalocarpus (syn. Pelecyphora) strobiliformis - a young adult with three very nicely coloured blooms - don´t suppose I will have that beauty long - trouble with these is Mrs Fly keeps swiping them to give as presents.

Pelecyphora aselliformis - one in flower, the other has a bud. They still fail to bloom together.

And my Lophophora williamsii which is continuing to cleave itself in two - and there is now a definite lump at the mid point of the cleft - I watch with interest. A few more sprouts have appeared as well.

I love the little sprouts!! I want them haha they look like they are young but they are already quite large!
That's just from you not collecting the seeds? Or do some inevitably get spread around?
I also really like the pely with 3 flowers, just squeezing in there.
Can't believe I haven't subscribed to this post yet.

The seeds appear in little pink berries - somewhere between 1 and 20 in each berry, usually 5 to 8. When I am very conscientious I collect the fruit as they appear and dry out the seed.
But often I miss loads, the berries dry and the seeds fall out, often into the soil where they readily sprout. And at the end of each season I pick off all the dried berries and gather as many seed as I can find.

In flower today - Strombocactus disciformis

A slow grower which doesn´t produce much of a root, I have had this one 14 years now. I like the red throat in the white flowers.

A Astrophytum myriostigma var. nudum with a hairy fruit split open and spilling out loads of seeds.

Sadly, they are not really of any use, as they will all be hybrid.

So i takeit you dont like hybrids. You should grow them out anyways. Would be a shame to lose all that seed.

Well, those seeds have been disposed of now, but if anyone wants some hybrid seed they are very welcome. I have a few Ariocarpus that have fruits of hybrid seed at the moment. I just don´t have the space to grow out all the seed that I get.

So its more a question of space rather than dislike. Why dont you sell them online like ebay? Im sure you would have some takers.
