As they say, NEVER say die !!! Just over a year ago I got some seeds of Cumarinia odorata - a rarely grown monotypic genus. Just a few, and I sowed them in a small pot. After some months nothing had happened, so I put that pot to one side - needed the lighting space. Yesterday I decided to recycle that pot and found 3 little sprouts - sitting in dust dry soil. So I gave them some sorely needed water and put that pot under the fluoros again - it will stay there until the spring. So don´t be too quick to give up on your seeds - they just might be a bit slow.

First Flower of 2016 !!
Been in the UK for a couple of weeks - mother´s 90th !! The plants are in their winter quarters, been totally dry for 2 months - resting, but not dormant.
I was greeted on my return by a nice floral display from my Stenocactus multicostatus - lovely to see. Also came back with another two dozen Long Tom pots.

That's a beauty. What size pot is that? Always hard to tell the size of a plant from pictures.

P.Zap - that is a 4". In future I shall try to remember to include a clothes peg or something to give scale.

I've always thought the lighters and pens took from the beauty of a photo. But I've also been totally thrown off due to scale before, so I understand the need at times.
What a beautiful flower to go home to SF!

No way, they're beauties. I have a few small ones I grew from seed and degrafted. They've all rooted and I'm looking forward to see them put on some natural growth this summer.

You're got some gorgeous plants there and they are very beautifully potted too. Did you make your cold frame? I can't tell whether it is plastic or glass? It looks pretty nifty.

Thanks for the kind words - I always find a bit of top dressing and a nice label smarten then up a bit. My cold frames are plastic and aluminium - imported from the UK. But plastic doesn´t last too well in the sun here - one will need renewing soon.

A few weeks since my last post. I have decreed this weekend (12 March 2016) that Spring has Sprung - warm and sunny and calm - I have taken my guys out of their winter quarters and put them on their regular tables on my roof terrace. They will get a good drink with some fert tomorrow.

With Lophophora flowers the stripe doesn´t have such a dense pigment - but they are certainly similar.

I meant lophophora alberto-vojtechii,and I should have been more specific.

It is the only Loph I own,and the only flowers I ever see. And no,that's not mine

There must not be too many pollinators in the area of Mexico where most of our favorite cacti come from, there are only a handful of basic flower colors and shapes that are remarkably similar across genera.

Spanishfly said: The Ariocarpus flower show refuses to stop. We had a deluge of rain one night a week ago, followed by warm sunny weather since. This has kept the Ariocarpus plump and warm and producing buds.
This afternoon I had in bloom:
 A. agavoides - I love the magenta colour of this one.
 A. bravoanus - this double header grew an additional head last winter - when it was supposed to be resting. I am waiting to see if it will eventually become two separate plants, which can sometimes happen.
 A. kotschoubeyanus - a slow grower - still completely outgrown by its blooms.
And I love the pure white of A. retusus
As I never commented on these as I was 'away'. Let me just do...
