stats Project on MPG's! DATA NEEDED! help?
    #22499052 - 11/09/15 05:23 AM (8 years, 2 months ago)

Hello,

So to start, here’s a little this experiment;
We’ve all seen advertisements, read articles, or heard personal testimonies that gas from one company is better or worse than another. Personally, my theory is that they’re all pretty much the same, but there are those who’d strongly disagree with me. As I see it, until at least this test is conducted, I don’t know of any unbiased evidence available to back any claims.
Due to the lack of necessary equipment, time, money and, well many other resources I cannot do an in depth analysis on the effects of the different additives in the gasoline provided by the various companies available, in all the different combination of vehicles available, however I do have at my disposal, JMP (if you don’t already know, is quite a powerful statistical analysis software) which allowed me to design my experiment to see if the gas provided by the different gas companies you may purchase from (ARCO, shell, Mobil, etc.) will make a statistical difference in the overall MPG of the general population, and potentially even refine the results even further to include much more specific conclusions.

In case you’re wondering, this is a project for a class I’m taking, but I rather like the idea of the experiment so I'm going to gather and analyze as many data points as possible, for as long as possible

So here is the procedure if you’re interested in contributing data

1. When you reach empty (or near empty) this is where we start:
Choose a gas company to commit to filling up with for three tanks.
And at first fill up record:
Example:
Vehicle information:
Type: Car/SUV/truck
Year: 2002
Make: Volkswagen
Model: Jetta Wagon
#of Cyl:  4
Mileage: 251034
Gas station: Chevron
Octane: 87

2. Now after driving around as usual, and when you reach near empty again go to your chosen station (in the case of the example I can only go to any chevron to fill-up with 87 octane)  and record:
Example:
Mileage: 251348
Number of gallons filled: 12.051

3. Repeat step 2. At the same gas station (example: chevron) Record:
Example:  w/ 87 octane
Mileage: 251634
Number of gallons filled: 11.198

4. Repeat step 3.

5. Choose Another Gas Station,

Example: Shell (Anywhere BUT chevron)

6. Repeat Steps 1 through 4

7. If you choose to continue AMAZING! (Repeat steps 1 through 6)
If not, Log one final mileage and gallon report, AND thanks for Everything!

With school stats projects it is always better to find an existing data set to do statistics on.  Trying to gather your own data is time consuming, detracts from the point of the course (doing statistics) and is often boarder-line unethical.

i appreciate the reply.. but just to clarify its actually a test design and analysis course I'm taking, which makes the point of the class the application of statistical theory and methodologies in designing and testing a theory. (but i didn't state that earlier, so your response did make a very valid point with the information given)

and i get that its a general statement... but what could you Possibly mean by: "Trying to gather your own data...,and is often boarder-line unethical."

i just don't see how the gathering of my own data in almost any experiment could be considered unethical in any way shape or form... this is assuming the experiment you're conducting isn't unethical in any particular manner to begin with.

(just looking for clarification considering your post, this is not meant to be hostile in any manner)

You are getting strangers (people) to take part in research without any type of official disclosure, oversight or written authorization.  Involving people in experiments requires oversight and disclosure.  I say borderline because this is just for a class and its just miles per gallon... but strictly speaking you should not be using people for research of any kind without written authorization and disclosure of your research's goals and how the information will be used.  Also, you are not in a position to verify self reported findings which casts doubt on validity which also needs to be disclosed if you want to be scientifically ethical and credible.  Again, I realize this is not real research its just for a class... but if teachers want to teach scientific methods they should teach the ethics and proper research techniques.  If I was your teacher I would forbid the students from using strangers or other people (or animals) in their data gathering.

well... i honestly don't know what to say to that.. ive come to realize that no matter the situation, or circumstances, someone somewhere always feels something about a study or experiment is completely unethical. And starts this whole thing about people and animals and how they shouldn't be wronged, or lied to, ect.

what i mean by all this is that sometimes its not that complicated, and in the end no ones being hurt.

however, this really caught my attention and maybe im not thinking it through as completely as i should but,

how am i, or anyone else not be "in a position to verify self reported findings"

isn't that what im supposed to do with my findings? then after results are "published" others replicate the experiment to verify? (or prove otherwise.)

and what could you possibly mean by?
"... casts doubt on validity which also needs to be disclosed if you want to be scientifically ethical and credible."

but none the less I appreciate your contribution, and this definitely gives me a topic to discuss with my professors.

I'm thinking about different issues. I don't think different brands of gas result in different MPG in the short run. The whole selling point of the top brands is the detergent additives that supposedly keep your fuel injectors and other parts cleaner, which could result in better mileage in the long run. But other factors are involved. Is the driver getting scheduled tuneups. Is a mechanic cleaning the injectors. I have heard more good reports about using higher end gas treatments (I like Lucas) than higher grade gas to avoid needing expensive injector cleanings at the shop.

Related to what Die Commie was saying, most professional research comes from purchased/rented data tapes. This speeds up the whole process for professors in publish or perish jobs, and separating data gathering from data analysis promotes higher objectivity to the study.
