Psilocybe azurescens and mostly rotten Psilocybe azurescens. I don't see any standouts, but it's your obligation to make sure of them all.

--------------------

Attn PWN hunters: If you should come across a bluing Psilocybe matching P. pellicolusa please smell it.
If you detect a scent reminiscent of Anethole (anise) please preserve a specimen or two for study and please PM me.

yah i was just noticing how similar some of the gallerina's can be. it is my understanding they are much more fragile and have reddish rusty brown spore sprint. The ones that are "rotten". are they no good? i have dried them since and they have held their form...thank you for your opinions.

It depends on how rotten, though it is probably fine. They may or may not be attributable to stomach cramping and the like but I don't know of any serious illness associated with them in that condition. I would be amazed if it were not possible but otherwise many people simply find it off-putting.

all the one's with the white stems I feel right on about. Its the darker ones with the hints of red and chocolate brown in the stem. Am i to understand the only difference between aged azies and aged galerinas is the microscopic and the gill color? can the gills of the galerina's turn dark purp or black like azzies? I am an experienced hunter from another region. I was positive in the field, but after reviewing gallerinas i have my worries. HAs anyone experienced darker stemmed azzies? sometimes falling apart from age. Am i mistaken in that gallerinas can only grow on wood, and therefore a sandy grassy dune would not most likely not allow them to grow. All of these came from the dunes, none were found growing FROM rotting wood. I am just concerned. I took spore prints however some of the older specimens would not print. the spores that had been released in the wild and had covered the caps. black darkish purple goo. I will most likely throw a bunch of these out. however i would be grateful for any speculation. i can also provide pictures of dry specimen. thank you for your help.

I am grateful for you responses. It seems clear the difference of the two in their habitat and their gill structure. I would just like to know if the galerina can grow in the sandy environment the azzies love so much. any thoughts would be helpful. i do not want my first azzie trip to be spoiled by paranoia. the orange gills of the gals will be obvious right? like clearly not that of a psilocybe. I feel i am freaking myself out, i would just like some more info from other experienced hunters. google can only tell you so much about the conditions a mushie will grow in.

Yeah  I wouldn't be afraid of mixing up galerinas with Azzies ... some of these are quite old though, even if you can't grab a spore print from them if you rub your finger under the caps you should get a good idea as to the spore colour. These don't look like galerinas to me at all. ... when they are so far gone as long as you don't see mould on them they should be okay, just make sure to dry them fairly quickly.

Cheers!

Thanks, i was all doubtin my skills. I found some closed cap gals in my neighborhood and shit got my brain goin. they look very similar but the stem is so different. Is there any info you would offer me to help me identify them in the future? i found the azzies on the coast. didnt seem likely place for gals but you never know.. I used to hunt cubes down in Alabama, USA. they are easy to peg against any possible lookalikes. but these wood lovers are a lil new. got em pegged now too i hope.thanks again

The closed caps are pins. You should leave those there. They'll get bigger.

I will never picked closed caps again! not only will they grow but they are scary potent. i ate all three of them and shit man, azzies are something else. definitely an evolutionary catalyst.

Yeah, pins are monsters.

I ate one on it's own while camping around 2004 and while it wasn't spectacular by any means, I was amazed to notice much at all and I surely did a little more than notice.

after the paranoia of the gal scare. I think i will be attempting some cultivation. wish me luck. as much as i love the hunt, the curioisity of science is very appealing and more controled. thanks again for your help, and you are right about the stomach cramps with the rotten ones. would it be possible to create a spore solution from their dried specimens? i have heard of jar of distilled water and and some darkness can do some wonders...

1 medium Azzy is my max at the moment.

but now this,  http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/11600795#11600795 ; does this seem applicable to specimens. the tinge of blue green is offputting i agree. anybody got more opinions?

I wouldn't say so ... there are a few Stropharia sp. (all of which are non-toxic) that always display a blue or blue/green tint without bruising, but if you found these all together with those pins etc I think you're okay - many of them are old and will naturally show this colouration. I think though it's probably best to stick with more fresh specimens in the future.

Cheers
