any piano players in the house??
#22497295 - 11/08/15 06:39 PM (8 years, 2 months ago) |

im trying to reorganize my day so i can have time for all my endeavors, been busy with other things that i view as a strategic priority as those things can develop quicker than others so ive only had time everyday to quickly maintain my endurance in piano, although even doing this has made me a lot better at playing what i know of certain pieces.
Im trying to make goals in my life, and im juggling a lot but i want to try to be able to play "la Campanella" by Franz Liszt fully by the end of 2016, hopefully sooner.
i can play the first 2 pages or so very well, not going to lie it took a year of just kinda bullshit practice to be able to accurately make the jumps on everything, im trying to play it at the speed and performance quality Valentina Lisitsa does and so far its going good, no where near lisitsa godlike but im getting better and better. Ive been reading online about a lot of piano students studying it end up giving up because they cant perform the jumps on the first two pages even. I gotta admit i thought i was going to have to give up it seemed out of my capability to do it accurately but damn after all this time of just doing it over and over my hands can do it easier and easier, and faastt too,
just have to keep it up,
Anyone else dabble in the keys??
Heres the god of destruction Valentina Lisitsa forever slaying anyone that tries to play it

It's a great time to be a pianist because of the many tutorials and such on the net. I own a piano but I cannot play it very well unfortunately.

Hey mate good on you for playing I played for about 8 years before I hurt my left arm, dedication to practice was so difficult, I give you credit for practicing that much
I have always loved Lang Lang, great ambassador for the piano, have you seen him and Metallica perform?

did you hurt your left arm from playing?
i keep hearing that you can only play for four hours a day on high virtuoso without doing damage. ive been sticking to that advice when i do serious learning.
and for liszt you can definitely feel terrible pain in your forearms.

I like this kinda stuff mixing pianos and electronic music (also Jon Hopkins). This guy had an audio visual tour looked like this that I wanted to attend but I'd also like to get a DVD version to play at the edge of my bed haha.

Have you tried to play any Rachmaninoff?
RSI is a bitch. Nah not from playing, from getting old lol. You are spot on though you shouldn't overdo it and my teachers were right, posture posture posture... Having a teacher look at how you hold your hands and sit was something that you could never teach yourself.
I was always told if it starts to hurt stop but if you can play 8 hours straight without hurting go for it!
I have an organ, jealous of you bastards who have a piano though. I still play with my right hand, surprising how quick I can read and play like that lol.
@SoloTrip I love that 'fusion'(?) stuff too, have never been to a show like that but would love to. I've been to a few Symphony Orchestra vs Looney Tunes but that wouldn't compare to something like that I think.

i think you really need a strong base though of learned material to extract ideas and inspiration from and i dont think i know enough pieces yet to be able to do that effectively.

been putting more focus into learning la campanella now, learned a few new bars just gotta get quicker, gonna try to see if i can learn it as quick as possible, ive seen people on youtube claim to learn it in 3 months but didnt play it amazingly but still thats encouraging on an estimate on how long it might take me with more focus put in.
so im at about 3 pages so far out of a possible 12-14 i have to count it. Lol. but a lot of those are just long runs of scale type shit. will report back

Piano player here. Taught myself back in highschool. Then I took an introductory class in college. I'm thinking of taking a level II class to force myself to get better.
The house I recently moved into has a nice hall piano. I've been playing a lot more recently as a result.
It's reminded me that real pianos are so much more satisfying than electric imitations. The weight of the keys, the resonance of harmonies. It makes it a very meditative practice.
I've composed one piece for the piano that is intended to sound 'classical'. A friend overheard me playing the piece and asked me what composer that was. Couldn't help but smile from the unintended compliment.

ayy thats awesome,
I would only ever want to compose virtuoso pieces so i'll definitely need a large body of material to work with to be able to do that.
so i just have to learn as much of the high level stuff as i can, i suspect after doing that i'll have a better idea about what id want to make.

ive been spending a massive amount of time on la Campanella lately but jesus i made progress , although ive been spending more time on it at the moment than my art; which im now going to switch back to my main focus for a bit, its great that i got this much better at playing it, was playing for 3-5 hours a day this week
With a lot of time spent just playing it again and again and again x billion i can add a few more bars and just keep doing that, ive been playing it so much i figured out how to relax my hand while doing the jumps and my hand literally moves like a whip hitting every jump accurate as fuck and ridiculously fast, and i am SUPER happy with my trills . the more relaxed you can get your hand the faster you can move it, i have it at the point where it feels like a rag-doll when i move it. Its odd though, it seems theres a threshold speed that once you surpass it, it almost sounds satanic in how it opens up a more complex range of dynamics that you cant get at slower speeds.
The accuracy came from just trying to hit the notes properly at a crazy fast speed and it just calibrated to the point where i dont need to think about it and the proper note gets hit, wicked. Although i dont think i could do this if i was nervous at all so preforming it in public is a different story.
im still only on around page 4 out of 15 but what i do know i can play pretty much at a solid professional level with clarity and no mistakes. I wont be happy until i can play all of it near valentina lisitsas level so dont worry nothing is gonna be half assed.
Once i finish it fully and can play it at a quality level im proud of i'll put it on shroomery and maybe i could get some critiquing.

Okay i decided to record a sample of what i know so for, but damn i gotta say, playing for practice and trying to record it are too VERY different things. even the hint of pressure to perform causes my fingers to move out of calibration, so i have trouble hitting the high jumps when im trying to record myself doing it, but once i turn the camera off i can do it with ease. Its like fucking double slit nonesense lol, so frustrating.
I have no idea how people perform this at professional speed and not mess up, any hint of nervousness and you are pretty much fucked because how fast you have to move makes it almost look like you have parkinsons disease
but i tried my best to record a reasonably accurate run to show you where im at, but alas i still play it much better, accurately and smoothly when i have zero pressure on me to make sure its perfect. but obviously it starts off decent and gets progressively shittier as I get near the end, obviously cuz my fingers have practiced the first parts longer, but just try to imagine what it will be like when every bar is played at the same quality, once my fingers get more accustom to the new movements.
its nice though the next parts are just variations of a similar pattern in the right hand only getting slightly more complex, but i have been practicing the right hand for these parts and i find no trouble with it so i cant wait til i get past those part.
Anyways heres the sample
Im still trying to desect valentina lisitias smoothness, it is really hard to produces such a smooth run at such high speeds, but playing over and over gets me slightly smoother each day. unfortunately my smoothness goes slightly down when i try to perform/record it because of nerves.

fuck man that is fast! I don't think it's too hard for you. Pity pianos don't have a line out hey? Would be good to listen to without hearing the 'click' of the keys (when you're playing up that high that fast I don't think you can help it)!

thnx guys! Yeah the click is annoying, and having the phone up to the piano that close just makes the sound so shitty quality. plus the piano is an old yamaha electronic. Really wish i had a grand P one day

i seriously cant wait until i get to the climax of la campanella, ive romanticized about climaxs enough that i want to make sure its grandiose as FUCK at the build up to the end and not many players understand what they are building too and end up missing the train i find.. i love valentinas version because it really builds to that triumphant epic climax. It has to be like its building to some ultimate truth, or towards infinite novelty like terence mckennas singularity or omega point.
gonna be soooo sick cant wait.
i see the whole piece as an expression of humanity's will to succeed.

SleepyE said: Okay i decided to record a sample of what i know so for, but damn i gotta say, playing for practice and trying to record it are too VERY different things. even the hint of pressure to perform causes my fingers to move out of calibration, so i have trouble hitting the high jumps when im trying to record myself doing it, but once i turn the camera off i can do it with ease. Its like fucking double slit nonesense lol, so frustrating.
I totally understand man. I recently recorded myself playing a piece, and I was getting seriously frustrated with how many takes I had before I even got a decent one.
And then when the camera was off I'd play it perfectly.
I'd post it here if it weren't on facebook.
Also, that was very well performed. I wish I could play that fast. How long have you been practicing?
I recently heard this song:
Not a hard piece to learn, but I instantly fell in love with it. I've started singing recently, but never sang while playing piano so I figure this would be a good one to learn on. Just need to find the sheet music for it...
I wonder if Crystal G will wander into here. I know she plays.

Aha the struggle
Singing is definitely key, if i had a wider vocal range id get into it too, not sure if singing is a talent that can be learned, or if u have to be born with a certain voice. But i find myself envious of a lot of peoples vocal ability. If looked online for singing lessons and there is a bunch of exercises used to train your vocal range to hit higher notes.
Im gonna check out that vid u posted once i get to my desktop computer
Aha and when i was around 8-10 i started lessons and did that for about 2 years, played 3 recitals. last one was cannon D (which my teacher discouraged me to play because i did not have the experience ) aced it anyways I can believe i had the balls to play in front of 100s of people at such a young age, certainly dont have the balls for that now and the recital halls were huge because it was multiple schools coming to perform. Mine was a russian music school
at 12-14 i was learning to do 3d modelling to import into games like counter strike so my focus was divided between piano and art. started doing Tool renditions at 14.
then When i was around 15 i didnt have much in common with high schoolers my age so i spent my time trying to master rachmaninoff op32 no2 and i no lifed it just playing it over and over trying to increase speed and clarity until i got to a quality and speed that was better imo than most recordings of the piece i could find. I was a big tool fan so that influence shinned through as well, big influence on my understanding of climaxs.
But training on rachmaninoff that hard and long gave me quite a well developed technique, if i can master la campanella then there is literally nothing that is too hard for me to play, liszt composed the most difficult piano pieces ever written and la campanella is one of them. when i dont work i practice it 3-5 hours a day. only thing that is tricky at the moment is 3-4 note trills on the same note so it needs to sound like a bullet and each finger has to clear the note before the next one hits otherwise it doesnt register.
i looked up the difficulty level and it said
Difficulty Level: Asian

thought this was funny as well lol

do it! go even higher in complexity if you can. thats what i found tough, is thinking of complex patterns to use in a composition.
but i have no melody skills yet so thats something il have to focus on, so ur definitely ahead of the game

You should start composing Sleepy, you only need to learn the rules to know how to break them...
Have you seen this program? Makes composing a lot easier than with paper and pencil sometimes.

I compose entirely by ear. Theory takes a back seat since a trained ear recognizes proper theory without the need to actively think about it. It's like improvising. You just know what sounds right and what doesn't.

I had a cousin that could read and play anything you put in front of her, it was a bit freaky sometimes. Can you do that? I need weeks of practice to even get a semi decent pace going with anything new.
I love the colour of your piano btw

I wish! My reading ability's a bit lacking, not to mention sight reading....
And thanks, I wish it was my piano. It's my roommates. I asked him if he would let me buy it since no one in his family ever plays it, but apparently it's his wife's baby.
Alas, I'll have to find my own piano...one day

I feel you on the whole 'not my piano' thing, I learnt from a young age on my parents piano, they had it for many years. One day a relative (we hardly see) rocks up to claim ownership and takes it away. The douche bag can't even play. This was after my folks having it for 20 years +.
Pianos are expensive here but shitty organs are a dime a dozen. I picked up mine for $30 delivered. As you can see it's missing a couple of octaves (4 I think) unless you want to rock it church style and use the bottom keys (I don't like to it's unnatural). No way I could play what you guys are cranking out At least it's mine I guess
Foot pedals make some great bass noises

yeah nothing can imitate that sound, not even a sample (that I've found yet) or VST sounds the same. + my organ there is no sensitivity on the keys so you're not able to play quiet / loud both hands (pedal does master). But..... it's good for playing things like this;

ugh i just spent the whole day relearning a part on the third page of la campanella, i wasted my time practicing improper fingering on that part, it was impossible to have fluid timing with the shitty fingering i was using, had to carefully read which fingers were designated for each note.. i need to watch that, cant be wasting my time with nonsense like that.. Fuck. oh well, at least it didnt take me a long time to relearn it but its not accurate enough yet at the speed i want to go cuz i havent played it enough yet but at least the main problem is fix, no more jumpy timing.

nice been making good progress on la campanella, almost on page 5 or 6, still need to get better at page 4 or 5 but below that i can play it all at a professional level, just ironing out the minor finger fibs here and there but its definitely solid as fuck.
just ten or eleven more pages to go.. lool (have to look at pages again to see exactly where im at but i made progress forsure.)
i cant miss even 1 day of practice because my agility and endurance goes way down to the point where i cant play it and then it takes me a whole day of practice to regain the agility to play it properly.
fuck its frustrating.

its not even forgetting how to play it, its just my fingers cant do it quick and accurate enough if i miss a day, then it takes hours to regain the speed and accuracy. i have never had this much trouble retaining ability on a piece before. Its definitely a full time job to try to play it professionally.

I think some pieces may have been written so the writer could show off their ridiculous skills a bit . Stick at it man, when you get it you will hopefully not forget it for a long time. How long are you practicing a day now?

still been practicing 2-4 hours a day, not skipping a beat. Going to try to record a video of me playing la campanella to show you where im at, i can now play the first whole 5 pages at full speed/dynamics, certainly past amateur level but not quite at the professional quality i want yet imho, but its getting really good
il try to have it recorded by today or tomorrow, depending on if i can get a fully accurate run or not.

nope i have it all memorized.
im still perfecting the speed and accuracy on the last bit its really good already but i want it better, its the double trill note run of the overall melody, the trippy sounding part.
been practicing for 2 hours today but its not quite ready for recording so i think tomorrow il be ready.

its 15 pages total.
so im around 1/3 through it.
its crazy though my skills have gotten wayy more precise and dynamic and i have crazy dexterity in movements i was garbage in. this piece really tests every part of a virtuoso's skill sets.
apparently this piece teaches you every technique to play virtually anything. cant want until i climb this everest of a mountain i must get the sttooooonee

learning piano can be quite difficult without proper instruction, but it can be done
still practicing what im trying to record, turns out saying i was going to record it was premature because tbh i wasnt quite ready, was getting ahead of myself, but ive been grinding straight for around 4 hours today and im really making progress on making my accuracy solid all the way through.
i want what i show you guys to be what i hear when im not recording but to get it on film is still going to need more practice, but my sample is close

i cant sit straight on what im playing, my face needs to be closer to the keyboard or tends to need to be, probably bad for my posture but i make sure my posture is amazing while in everything else like standing and sitting so im sure its not too bad.
been practicing for around 5-6 hours today,, jeesus my hands are dead, nothing but la campanella for hours

I promised a progress video and here it is, its 1/3 of the whole piece, still have 2/3 of it to go
recorded it with my digital camera but i have no firewire yet so i cant upload directly so i had to film it with my phone.
Im pretty embarrassed by all the mistakes ive made on this sample, its amateur as fuck. i still have MUCH more practice to go, its so frustrating, when im not filming and dont have pressure on my i can play it much clearer, accurate and dynamic but when i film it my nerves severely damage my performance. im slowly getting better at playing it under pressure but it still has so long to go. Sometimes i feel like its impossible to play this perfectly but i want to keep trying.
I really want to master the whole thing it by august but i feel like thats wayy to optimistic, even the idea of mastering it is optimistic, fuck i hope i didnt bite of more than i can chew, but il keep grinding away at it for hours everyday like i have been,.

i was looking on the abrsm.org forum to know what the technical rating of the piece is, because they have some weird scale for the really challenging pieces, i dont quite understand the levels and what qualifies yet.
but someone said La campanella is beyond diploma standard
this was a neat quote too, definitely motivating
Quote:
When talking about a piece such as "La Campanella" you can throw Grades out of the window. Franz Liszt was a Genius and possibly the greatest ever Virtuoso Pianist in the History of the Instrument. Therefore, before attempting a piece like "La Campanella" ask yourself this question. Do I consider myself to fall into the same bracket as Franz Liszt? i.e. am I a virtuoso pianist with a phenomenal technique and memory and be able to span a tenth and beyond with ease? Personally, my answer would be no and I have been playing the piano for 25 years and can reach a 10th easily. I attempted parts of Liszt's "Apres une Lecture du Dante" at one point in my foolish youth and the only thing I acheved was a feeling of total inadequacy, a mild nervous breakdown and sprained right hand after constantly stretching 12ths. ohmy.gif Sure, it sounded impressive when I played excerpts of the piece to family and friends wheened on Pop Music, but I knew deep down, that what I was playing was only a mediocre attempt at the performance of the music. I could probably learn the notes of "La Campanella" with a few hours a day of study but would I be able to play it with the flair and artistry that the piece needs? I doubt it as I am no virtuoso! It would sound adequate to the untrained ear I suppose. Personally, I dont enjoy performing what I call "Tightrope" pieces in the sense that you always feel nervously balanced on the keys and about to fall at any moment during the performance. It takes a very brave, confident person and virtuoso player to perform a piece like this in public....someone say like Franz Liszt in fact! rolleyes.gif If anyone here can play "La Campanella" with flair and artistry I have just one question..... Can I have your autograph please?

i was expecting to have much more trouble with progressing forward because where i left off is where the complexity starts increasing dramatically and many people complain about the difficultly in the next part where i have to quickly hit the same key 3 times in a trill motion and do that multiple times in the riff to make it look like my fingers are gliding on the keys and i got to say im picking it up pretty damn well, just increasing speed now.
Also have cleaned up a lot of what i know already. i got pretty ocd and didnt stop practicing until i could hit almost every note WITHOUT 'nicking' or grazing a note next to it, and i got to say, playing at these speeds and making all those jumps its almost IMPOSSIBLE not to graze another note. but its fun to try, and im making killer progress as well on that so im somewhat satisfied. just hope i can pull off that deeply complex parts, im a little worried that my pinky strength wont be sufficient for the coming parts but ive gotten good at training a finger to do specific movements its never done before and i gain speed and agility pretty quick because ive had to build it in other movements for so long i know the drill

alright sweet, looks like i might be able to finish this piece by the deadline ive set for myself. Already finished the next page and i can play it pretty flawlessly most of the time, but still more room for improvement.
already planning which next piece im going to learn after la campanella and it seems la campanella is going to be my training for the next piece i want to take on.
but yeah next is going to be Liszt's Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2
you have probably heard it before if you have seen who framed roger rabbit, i was shitting myself when i found out they were actually playing liszt, so badass.
the scene is called dueling ducks
and this is valentina playing it
the melody the ducks are playing starts near 5:30 or so

maaan i just breezed through and learned half a page at like 12:00am tonight, its sick im learning the notes faster and faster because even though its getting more complex the melody recycles the overall notation pattern so i can make alot of accurate guesses based on what ive learned so far to help me memorize the new bars im learning faster.
i can already play half of the new page at a decent speed
sorry to keep bumping this thread, just getting excited to know that im definitely going to finish this before august at this pace and even been quite practiced at it by then, but my ultimate goal is to be able to perform it in public by august, fuck im going to try my hardest

just a bit of an update, i have 2 more pages to learn until i get to the last section which is the the build up to the climax as well as the climax its self. Thats the last stage where shit gets fucking nuts and crazy Never thought id make it this far on the piece, been spending an enormous amount of time pretty much everyday burning myself out playing this non stop at full speed and full bore
I estimate it will take another 20 days or so to become proficient in the next 2 pages to come, so expect a progress video in 20 days, so technically i will be a little bit more than 2/3 of the way through it. which will give me almost four months to become proficient at the climax to meet the deadline ive set for myself, which i hope will be enough time for me to be skilled enough to perform the whole thing been spending anywhere from 3-7 hours a day practicing when i dont have work,(only work like 2-3 days a week so i can have time for my many endeavours.

hey, just bumping this thread to let u know where im at, so im making good time, im pretty well proficient in all 11 pages ive learned, with 4 pages left to learn, but i really want to buy a better camera before i post the progress video. and im playing what a know at a higher caliber imo then my previous video, improved accuracy, speed and dynamics.
but on the bright side if this was a video game i would be on the last level i am now at the "Death climax." it is supposed to be uber hard but ive been very well trained on what ive learned and every fucking note on this piece has been uber hard so far(jesus especially the super fast trills ) so its not any extremely new territory for me. this whole piece has been a huge leap in my ability so naturally once im faced with even harder sections il be much more prepared for it so im quite confident i will slay it. So i have around 4 months to learn the last 4 pages and hopefully be able to play it at a professional level.
this is so surreal for me, i wasnt sure if i could make it to the climax but now that it is the last brick in my way its starting to feel a little scary, like one of those dreams where you believe you can fly and in a snap you are able to do it but once you over think it you crash and burn. from start to finish me learning this piece almost felt like a millisecond blur where i dreamed about being able to do it now i pretty much almost can.
shits blowing my mind

Ahaha, man ive been tainted by watching videos of the pros playing it and see people complaining that their finger slipped slightly on one note and these guys give them absolute shit. But its funny cuz all the people who complain about minor mistakes couldnt play this stuff for their life loll guess people like to think they are critics

definitely! i know that what I see in my playing is different then what others do. since im trying to improve it always all i can hear is the minor flaws but i dont seem to pay much attention to the things i do right.
i have to say though watching others play it before i knew how to play it is a completely different experience than knowing how to play it and watching others.

Hey guys, ive been MIA on this thread but im just checking in to say that im almost finished la campanella, less than 2 pages to go which is just finishing the climax.
it took me ~two months to perfect the beginning of the climax to a level that i think is strong. its the most difficult part because the jumps are soo massive and quick so i was just playing that part over and over for 2 months and finally im accurate at the speed im going for.
ive been consistently practicing for 3-6 hours everyday and maybe ~2 hours on the very few days a week i work so naturally my proficiency at the piece has increase dramatically.
i can channel intense power and speed especially in the climax, it looks fucking alien when i do it ahah
this shit is exciting, its almost finished at long last.
expect a finished final recording in august. i will try to have it complete as early in that month as possible but i wont rush perfection so im just going to hope if i put an insane amount of time in these last few days then i can get it at the standard im going for.
but its going stupid well, every note i hit is clear and accurate even at the extremely fine movement/quick parts. when i slow down the recording im trying to go for zero note hiccups or blurs, sort of a way to check my work

Hey guys, figured id chime in a let you guys know how its going and why ive been a little late with the finished project. Well it was wishful thinking to assume id have a finished recording by the deadline i set at the quality that im looking for. So instead of rushing myself and ultimately sacrificing quality to meet the deadline, id just take the stress off and work on it like crazy but set the deadline when i feel i can realistically perform it at the quality that im looking for.
So ive learned the whole piece and now i am just trying to perfect playing it all the way through without mistakes. i can play all the sections without mistakes but piecing it all together is going to take a bit more work until it has very few mistakes. The full recording will be complete very soon.
But i will at least give a small sneak peak of the quality i am attempting to achieve thorough the whole piece, What i play here might sound passable but i fucked up a few of the trills in this if you slow it down and listen closely but my fingers were tired so they were slower and less accurate from hours of playing before hand.
anyways, have a great night guys. i will have the full recording finished as soon as i possibly can.

Thanks guys! I appreciate the support! The Piece run time is about 4 min 30 seconds for 15 pages. And yeah learning this piece has been pretty hard on my body. A few of the joints are briused in my fingers and the tips of the fingers get quite bruised as well. Plus i developed tendonitis in my forearms and last but not least i have a pressure sore on my butt cheek from sitting in one position too long so i got padding which i hope will allow the skin to heal. Its just a circle of hyperpigmentation in the skin but can get worse if i dont take care of it.
