No soak straw
    #22496838 - 11/08/15 05:23 PM (8 years, 2 months ago)

Yea i said it! Hot bath pasteurize unsoaked straw. My thinking is turn a 2 step process into 1 and save time. This is not to improve yields by any means!!! I'm just sick of working on mushrooms every dam day so im trying to simplify and KISS everything. I'll do a batch later this week or next week as a trial. Anyone have any experience with not soaking straw? Im willing to bet i can fit more substrate into my drum since its not all swollen, and while the water content and most likely yield will be lower the increased dry weight should make up for this. I would probably go from a 90 min pasteurization to a 120 min to help make up for no soak. Any input?

ive never presoaked straw and had 100 % rate and great yields I would put the straw in right after adding water and then it would take about 2 hours to get to right temp.. let it sit there for 1 or 2 hours take straw out let it drain a while and then mix in grains and put in bags.. straw is pretty forgiving .. haven't grown any oysters in 2 or 3 years.  I am thinking about getting back into it soon... gotta get some new cultures... good luck

i don't really understand since there's no reason to soak straw before you.....soak it in hot water?  haha

All the teks and chat i've ever read say pre soak for at least 12 hours or 2 hours min if your using soapy water. I've noticed shorter soaks affect weight but not much, maybe 5-10% end weight. I guess this is comparable to soak no simmer grains. Yes simmering will get you 5-10% more water weight but it really won't make or break the spawn.

I never have pre-soaked straw either. I add soap to the batches though as well as a cup of lime. Never have had problems and always get good yields as well.

140F soak for an hour no longer. If you pasteurize at a higher temp like 160F soaking might be a good idea as the Pas. time should be reduced to 30 min.
