PF tek - dunking and rolling

Hi guys. Been lurking here for a bit and decided to make an account and join the fun.
I followed a pf tek guide for my first two (shitty but successful) grow attempts and used two 250mL beakers instead of the usual mason/canning jars along with vermiculite and brown rice flour as substrate. I've been doing a lot of reading and planning for my next grow, which will be much larger than my first two. I've found other guides including a "dunk and roll" step before moving the cakes to the FC: 20+ hour water dunk and then rolling the cakes in dry verm.
I'm wondering if anyone has any insight into whether this step significantly increases yield. With a large number of cakes, I'd rather not spend the time with the extra prep if the increase is minimal.

You'll get better yields if you dunk and roll. Mushrooms are mostly water and cakes love a dunk. The verm will help the cake retain moisture better. If your cakes are pinning, pins super love water. I never had luck getting the verm to stick to the cake by tossing it in a bowl like in the video, so I filled a ziploc bag with verm and did a shake and bake kinda thing. Seemed to help.
Anyways, hope that helps and good luck on your grow!

^what she said!
Vermiculite also helps with making a "microclimate" ideal for fruiting.
Also, some people put a spoonful of dry vermiculite on the top of their cakes. Its supposed to help as well.
Dont forget to mist your cakes when they look semi-dry or dry!

Thanks for the quick replies tips!
Do you guys recommend sterilizing the verm for rolling (I was thinking baking a tray of it in the oven) or would it be fine out of the bag?
Also, I have planned for a FC setup that will be very humid with good FAE without uncovering, misting, and fanning. I'd like to avoid opening the FC as much as possible to minimize contams and disturbing the cakes. 20+ hours dunks seem excessive to me; assuming my setup works out in terms of humidity/FAE, would I be able to get away with 8-12 hours instead?

100% dunk n roll dude

You don't need to sterilize the verm. I know it's suggested in the Let's Grow Mushrooms videos, but it's not necessary.
You absolutely want to dunk for a minimum of 24 hours. Cakes love dunks. Pins love water. It's not like the shrooms can pull the humidity out of the air for fruits. That moisture has to come from somewhere.

PF cakes are extremely high in nutrtition and somewhat lacking in water capacity to expend that nutrition. Dunking helps fully hydrate the cake before putting it into the first flush.
The roll will help maintain microclimate around the cakes if you are using a high FAE fruiting chamber like an SGFC with a predisposition for drying out cakes if you slip up. If you're using a lower FAE fruiting chamber, it's unlikely it will have a large effect.

I spawned some popcorn casings and had double-overlay cause I didn't put enough hydrogen peroxide in my automated aquarium mister. I only got one mushroom so I cut off the head part where the seeds fall from and put it in a jar of LC and sprayed it all over a tin of PF cakes I made with gravel, cardboard, and bisquick in my microwave. I think it will be good cause B+ is so potent. Triggered yet? Only a square would say "a cube is a cube."
No, this does not look right...

Definitely dunk and roll, definitely 24 hours fully submerged. Feel the difference in weight of the cake before and after the dunk, as said above mushrooms are 90+ percent water. Fully colonized cakes are contam resistant, no fruiting chamber is sterile, the cakes encounter millions of contaminates after you birth them in open air anyways. Follow the link in my signature on property constructing and operating a SGFC for best results. Mist directly until glistening, repeat when not throughout the life cycle.
