Might be an obvious drying question...
    #22495059 - 11/08/15 10:28 AM (8 years, 2 months ago)

Been reading through the various old posts on drying methods, specifically oven/heat assisted drying.
I have used my oven to dry shrooms in the past with good results. Recently, I tried drying some freshly picked cyans in a different oven and have found that half of them ended up blackening, developing an oily surface residue and stinking, Im guessing the oven's heat assisted bacterial decomposition in the affected shrooms.
Would people recomend preliminary drying in an open room with a fan/hair dryer prior to putting them in the oven? They were wet from the rain when they went in and I think I did not provide a big enough opening with the door for sufficient air flow.
I will probably be able to get more soon so I want to make sure I avoid this the next time.
Thanks!

I used to dry in the oven with no problems but I would fan dry for 24hrs then finish them in the oven with the door cracked and a fan blowing at it. My guess is that they were maybe too wet?

I don't think the moisture had much to do with it.

You said yourself you don't think the door was open enough, and I didn't see you mention using a fan either.

Was your oven on the lowest possible setting? Lowest mine goes is 170° F

No I didnt use a fan and the oven door was ajar. Additionally, the space inside isnt huge and I had alot of pretty wet mushrooms.
The oven fan can blow at 0 degrees but I had it on 25C.

What kind of an oven goes all the way down to room temperature?

This one just has the option of turning the fan on but not the heat.
The light turns on so there will be some warming above room temp but with the door open it probably evens out somewhat...

Setting your oven to room temp in an effort to dry them doesn't sound like too much of a plan man. Is that how you tried to dry them before?

When people dry in ovens its around 160-180°f.

I had the heat turned up to approximately 25-30 degrees c this time, but in the past I had them at room temp and they were fine.

Additional question: I have two where the rotten/feet smell is faint and I can still sort of smell the regular mushroom beneath it. They havent turned black really and will probably dry ok. Would you still advise binning them?

I see no mention in the op how long it took you to dry them. Ideally, you want to dry as soon as possible. How long did you have them in the oven? Did you rotate/flip them during the process?

I put them in yesterday morning, flipped/re arranged them about 4 hours later. Have been checking them and monitering them since due to the problem so they have not be sitting in the same place. They are still in now (minus the bad ones) and should be cracker dry in a few more hours hopefully.

You need to dry them quicker.
