OH, the sadness.
    #22493919 - 11/08/15 01:28 AM (8 years, 2 months ago)

I had to take my  little 15 year old Lhasa today to the vet for the last time ever. She had been suffering from Cushing's disease. Wouldn't eat. Got leaner and leaner. Finally, a day or two ago, she started wheezing when she breathed. She would get up every once in a while and, with a wobbly gait, she would walk around.I spent a lot of time with her through the night running my hand from her head down her side to her tail. Seemed to sooth her. Her breath seemed to coalm down. I went to bed not expecting to sleep, and jerked awake a few hours later and went to see her immediately. She was half in and half out of her bed gasping. When I came near she suddenly flicked her head up to see me and dropped it back down. That was her last gesture.

I grabbed her and ran her over to the Vet Emergency Center.

You'd think a grown man wouldn't carry on like I did when I got her back in the car, taped into a cardboard box.

So, who knows anything about Cushing's in dogs?

Who knows anything sadder--except, I guess, losing a child--than this sort of thing?

I had a dog die a few weeks ago.  I painted a rock with her name as a grave marker/memorial.  I miss her  Maybe you can do something similar.  Even if you didn't bury you can make a little memorial by plating a tree or making a pile of rocks in a space that you find peaceful.

That is a good idea. I dug a deep hole in the back yard--no mean feat because of the network of roots. I put a couple of large clay pots on top. I wil get something of a more permanent nature.

When you get a pet like a cat or a dog you do so with the knowledge that if you are lucky you will get 15 years.  Give them a good life and a peaceful end and you will have done your duty.

it was 15 years old and you just took it to the vet for the first time?  LOL um ok.

cushings is kinda hard to manage I guess.  They dont feel that great all the time.  sometimes being on prednisone for an extended length of time can cause cushings.

Anyway...  They do a pre and post ACTH stim test to measure the levels of cortisol in its system.  Anyway its 15, if it didnt die from that it would have died of heart failure.  Which sounds like the wheezing and gaping and unable to get comfortable.  Old small dogs that suddenly start coughing, a lot of times its due to an enlarged heart.  you can get them on heart medications like enalapril or atenalol combined with lasix and that will extend their life for quite a while, if you're compliant.

yes, 15 years is better than average--but I was shooting for 18.Lhasas are fairly long lived--12-14 years and can go to 18 with a little luck. Big dogs don't fare as well. A golden retriever is old at 8. Boxers too. If you want your dog to be around a while, get small.

First time? How do you deduce that from the post?

She has been to vets numerous times in her life. I wouldn't be surpised if that fact didn't help shorten her life. If I had my way, I would not fool with vets--or MDs either--for more than setting bones and, in the case of dogs, cleaning teeth. I wish I had had my dog's teeth cleaned more often.

I am so sorry for your loss. I know what it feels like. I lost a boxer to cancer a few years ago. We had raised her from a pup and she had one hell of a personality. She was part of the family, truly.

That pain stems from love, and so it hurts the worst. Time will numb it more and more, but you'll always miss them and wish they were there with you. You have to just cherish the memories.

I think the only thing worse is losing a child. Honestly, I'd sacrifice a lot of people to have my dog back or to see her again.
