Are there any look-alikes on the Washington coast to azurescens? The stipe on the mature ones seem darker, so getting 2nd opinions.

Definitely not azures. Go ahead and send them to me and I'll toss 'em for you.

I've noticed cyanescens also lose the white in the stipe adverb mature, makes it harder to identify. Kinda freaky

I've never noticed that on cyans, but I just looked at a few that I picked today and, sure enough, the stems transition to an orangish color up near the cap.

It's never on young ones that I find, older ones bruise less too, makes me not want to pick anything old

So you think there's no chance of look alikes, just some old with dark stems?

That's what I think. But I'm in the Bay area and we don't have azures down here. So you deserve a more reliable answer.

Look at these pics from the Shroomery species file for azures. Dark stems.

There is always a chance of lookalikes, depending on how observant and attentive you are. It's an arbitrary term with limited utility.
On the other hand, there will be no gilled mushrooms which look like those, have purple-grown spores and bruise blue which aren't also a Psilocybe.
--------------------
Attn PWN hunters: If you should come across a bluing Psilocybe matching P. pellicolusa please smell it. If you detect a scent reminiscent of Anethole (anise) please preserve a specimen or two for study and please PM me.

Judging from the second pic I would say azzies are a good shout. They are definitely a Psilocybe in any case. The other pics are not the best to identify them all individually tho, so remember to print every one

Caution is good, but I don't think printing is necessary in this case.

Yeah they're definitely all azurescens. I can tell you from personal experience that the old ones with dingy stems are just fine. They may be less potent but hey, they're azurescens so you'll be all good.
