My grow tent just had an electrical fire!
    #22491388 - 11/07/15 03:25 PM (8 years, 2 months ago)

Went out to water my plants and the garage was full of smoke!
I guess my timer blew up...

Luckily all my plants were unharmed and the tent itself only recieved minor melt damage in one spot. The light and fan are fine too which is the expensive part.

Man that smelled terrible!

You should probably find out why it happened so it doesn't happen again. That coulda been bad.

I'm not an electrician but maybe you were pulling more current than your timer was rated for?

I honestly have no idea what happened.
I've used this timer for almost a year with no problems.
My best guess is the timer got stuck in the on position and over heated.

It's a 600w light and the timer was rated for 1750w

still shouldn't overheat if left on continuously

Who knows maybe it was a quality control issue. I'd still to figure out why or atleast take some safety precautions so it doesn't happen again you coulda burned your fuckin house down.

Yes it was rated to handle almost 3x what I was putting through it. It was a mechanical timer that's why I think maybe it got stuck on somehow.

check the circuit breaker associated with that outlet and see how many amps its rated for.  you might be pulling too many amps through the circuit and the breaker was faulty. are your washer and dryer on the same circuit? a space heater or window air conditiong unit? if so, were they running at the time of the fire?
you might just have to be creative about which circuits you plug which components into

also, what awg is the wire on that circuit? 14? 12? 10?

there are no flukes, there is faulty electrical components...

except the multimeters, fluke makes some of those

get one of these, they're set up to run single phase and 3 phase motors, motors tend to have a large current draw

yes but a faulty ballast can pull more amperage than needed it's supposed to and a
ballast is going to draw a lot of current, more than a light's wattage rating.
components can also have a higher claim of ratings than they actually have

Both are 15 amp.

Upon closer inspection it appears a mouse may have chewed the cord plugged into the timer and caused a short out so the power was running through the timer and into the cord about 3" before hitting the fray in the cord and causing the timer to overheat. That make sense?

15 amps is also pretty low. consider conduit and running a circuit specifically for your grow set up

your timer cannot handle your ballast.
Cheap mechanical timers just cannot handle the current spike when your ballast goes on.
Do not tell me that it should bc it´s marked to pull trough 1750w.
This has not anything to do with the real limits of your timer.
Would suggest you to use contactors guided by timer.

if you are pulling 30+ amps through a 15 amp breaker, its either going to trip all the time, or cause an electrical fire.

Theres a device that plugs into the wall, with a cord that comes out and plugs into a timer on a seperate outlet.  I dont recal the name of it, but I highly recomend you look into such a thing.

Would having everything plugged into a GFCI prevent it?

Now i'm all paranoid about my martha. The power strip has surge protection but its on a non-GFCI outlet with an appropriately rated breaker.

No.  GFCI plugs are ground fault circuit interrupters.  They flip when the path to ground is interrupted, not when amps are high.  They are there to prevent electrocution, not fire.

Right, that is just what they are rated for.

I am guessing you have a good idea of the problem.  Poor quality timer, chewed wires or both.  Consider a kill-a-watt meter that will show your amps/watts.  Then you can understand your baseline and be informed on how things are.  Otherwise, its easy to go crazy with grow tent automation.  I've spent more time on the sensors and software than my actual tent and plants...  But that is what I like.

when ballasts start they draw a lot of current, you could certainly have exceeded
the 15 amps the timer claims it's rated for

What are the dimensions of your tent?

Get a timer that is made for grow equipment, I've heard other stories of equipment that isn't designed for cultivation cycles failing.

Basically yes. All so make sure you are not pulling to much trough single breaker/fuse.
One thing that can cause this all so is too thin wiring.
Would check all of those and use either good quality timer, or contactor guided by timer.

Stay safe. Electric fires, no es Bueno.

this is actually how house fires start.

A mouse or rat gets into the walls, finds an electrical wire then chews on it, causing a short.  Then inside the walls catches on fire. Its bad news.

Good thing u were home!!!

As Pris mentioned, get some metal conduit to protect your wiring for the next attempt. Cover as much wiring as u can to prevent mr. Mouse from burning everything down.

Also, keep wiring off the floor if u can.

it's one of many reasons when growing, another reason is that people
often overload a circuit and a faulty breaker doesnt trip, another
reason is people without the proper knowledge decide to run their
own wiring and screw some shit up or peple doing retarded shit
especially in older homes such as bypassing a fuse

With the T5 light on, both LED's at full power, and all the other fans running, the numbers are below

watt 440
amp 3.68
volt 121.9

with the 2 flowering LED's off

Watt 124
AMP 1.23
Volt 123.2

-----
These numbers seem really low! What the fuck!? DId i get jewed on my LED's?

Can I go ahead and assume that this is safe power usage on one outlet on a 20w breaker?

Went out to water my plants and the garage was full of smoke!
I guess my timer blew up...

Luckily all my plants were unharmed and the tent itself only recieved minor melt damage in one spot. The light and fan are fine too which is the expensive part.

Man that smelled terrible!

Pro tip: don't buy cheap electronics

I worry about you sometimes zombi3.

If you would've managed to burn down your garage that wouldve seriously been the icing on the stupid cake :lolsy:

one thing to consider might be the gauge of any extension cords being used.  I'm using a space heater with an extension cord that was initially 16 gauge, and i noticed that the cord became pretty hot.  So i switched to the thicker 12 gauge cord, and that solved it.  It's surprising how many electrical fires are started by overheated extension cords--

long or undersized cords will destroy shit that pulls a lot of current.  i had a buddy that was running his freezer with a 50 foot cheap extension and the compressor gave out in under a year
