So I should get a better rated timer for a replacement and this shouldn't happen again?

if you are pulling 30+ amps through a 15 amp breaker, its either going to trip all the time, or cause an electrical fire.

Theres a device that plugs into the wall, with a cord that comes out and plugs into a timer on a seperate outlet. I dont recal the name of it, but I highly recomend you look into such a thing.

Would having everything plugged into a GFCI prevent it?
Now i'm all paranoid about my martha. The power strip has surge protection but its on a non-GFCI outlet with an appropriately rated breaker.

No. GFCI plugs are ground fault circuit interrupters. They flip when the path to ground is interrupted, not when amps are high. They are there to prevent electrocution, not fire.

no. proper wiring and components rated for the load make it safer

Right, that is just what they are rated for.
I am guessing you have a good idea of the problem. Poor quality timer, chewed wires or both. Consider a kill-a-watt meter that will show your amps/watts. Then you can understand your baseline and be informed on how things are. Otherwise, its easy to go crazy with grow tent automation. I've spent more time on the sensors and software than my actual tent and plants... But that is what I like.

when ballasts start they draw a lot of current, you could certainly have exceeded the 15 amps the timer claims it's rated for

timers are bullshit and can easily go faulty being that they're made in china just set an alarm and turn the shit on around the same time everyday

What are the dimensions of your tent?
Get a timer that is made for grow equipment, I've heard other stories of equipment that isn't designed for cultivation cycles failing.

New circuit breaker, or new house?
GFCI + AFCI

I'm getting ready to replace all my breakers with these. Better safe...

Basically yes. All so make sure you are not pulling to much trough single breaker/fuse. One thing that can cause this all so is too thin wiring. Would check all of those and use either good quality timer, or contactor guided by timer.
Stay safe. Electric fires, no es Bueno.

Upon closer inspection it appears a mouse may have chewed the cord plugged into the timer and caused a short out so the power was running through the timer and into the cord about 3" before hitting the fray in the cord and causing the timer to overheat. That make sense?
this is actually how house fires start.
A mouse or rat gets into the walls, finds an electrical wire then chews on it, causing a short. Then inside the walls catches on fire. Its bad news.
Good thing u were home!!!
As Pris mentioned, get some metal conduit to protect your wiring for the next attempt. Cover as much wiring as u can to prevent mr. Mouse from burning everything down.
Also, keep wiring off the floor if u can.

it's one of many reasons when growing, another reason is that people often overload a circuit and a faulty breaker doesnt trip, another reason is people without the proper knowledge decide to run their own wiring and screw some shit up or peple doing retarded shit especially in older homes such as bypassing a fuse
