My grow tent just had an electrical fire!

Went out to water my plants and the garage was full of smoke! I guess my timer blew up...
Luckily all my plants were unharmed and the tent itself only recieved minor melt damage in one spot. The light and fan are fine too which is the expensive part.
Man that smelled terrible!

You should probably find out why it happened so it doesn't happen again. That coulda been bad.
I'm not an electrician but maybe you were pulling more current than your timer was rated for?

I honestly have no idea what happened. I've used this timer for almost a year with no problems. My best guess is the timer got stuck in the on position and over heated.

It's a 600w light and the timer was rated for 1750w

still shouldn't overheat if left on continuously
Who knows maybe it was a quality control issue. I'd still to figure out why or atleast take some safety precautions so it doesn't happen again you coulda burned your fuckin house down.

Yes it was rated to handle almost 3x what I was putting through it. It was a mechanical timer that's why I think maybe it got stuck on somehow.

Like I said I've been runnin this setup off that timer for about a year with no problems, I'm going to investigate further but I think it was a fluke.

how many amps is it actually rated for and how many amps does your ballast draw

If they are each 110V devices their amperage rating will have the same ratio as their wattage rating...

check the circuit breaker associated with that outlet and see how many amps its rated for. you might be pulling too many amps through the circuit and the breaker was faulty. are your washer and dryer on the same circuit? a space heater or window air conditiong unit? if so, were they running at the time of the fire? you might just have to be creative about which circuits you plug which components into
also, what awg is the wire on that circuit? 14? 12? 10?

there are no flukes, there is faulty electrical components...
except the multimeters, fluke makes some of those
get one of these, they're set up to run single phase and 3 phase motors, motors tend to have a large current draw

yes but a faulty ballast can pull more amperage than needed it's supposed to and a ballast is going to draw a lot of current, more than a light's wattage rating. components can also have a higher claim of ratings than they actually have

Both are 15 amp.
Upon closer inspection it appears a mouse may have chewed the cord plugged into the timer and caused a short out so the power was running through the timer and into the cord about 3" before hitting the fray in the cord and causing the timer to overheat. That make sense?

15 amps is also pretty low. consider conduit and running a circuit specifically for your grow set up

your timer cannot handle your ballast. Cheap mechanical timers just cannot handle the current spike when your ballast goes on. Do not tell me that it should bc it´s marked to pull trough 1750w. This has not anything to do with the real limits of your timer. Would suggest you to use contactors guided by timer.
