Psilocybe ceres = Leratiomyces ceres = Psilocybe aurantiaca

I'm sure all hunters have stumbled upon Leratiomyces ceres. So doing research I've found indications that these could contain psilocybin and psilocin. These mushrooms are however listed as being toxic when eaten. Are these mushrooms really active? Is there a way to extract psilocin and psilocybin from a toxic mushroom?

Leratiomyces ceres does not contain psilocybin (nor psilocin) and it's not psychoactive.

In theory, yes. You would need to be pretty sophisticated in chemistry and lab gear though.

So was the naming of the mushrooms as psilocybe ceres a mistake at one point in time or does a mushroom containing the name psilocybe not have any bearing on it actually being an active mushroom?

Leratiomyces ceres was published in Mycotaxon in the year 2008, following genetic testing. It was originally published though in 1891 as Agaricus ceres, and was again described multiple times over the years. It was a mistake to place it in Agaricus and it was a mistake to place it in the genus Psilocybe. All species in the genus Psilocybe contain psilocybin, although there are psilocybin species in other genera (Panaeolus, Gymnopilus, Inocybe, etc). There are no active mushrooms in the genus Leratiomyces.

Yes, over the years and years a lot of muhsrooms have been placed in Psilocybe and moved back out when various relationships became more clear, and indeed there were til rather recently a whole lot of inactive msuhrooms in Psilocybe. It turned out none of the belonged and many of them now have their own genus; https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deconica

Attn PWN hunters: If you should come across a bluing Psilocybe matching P. pellicolusa please smell it. If you detect a scent reminiscent of Anethole (anise) please preserve a specimen or two for study and please PM me.

Sorry to disagree, but in this article from the Royal Botanic Garden of Edinburgh, it says diferently, and a friend of mine, wich is a mycologist says the same, this mushroom is psycadelic. https://stories.rbge.org.uk/archives/13568

The article you link to doesn't state anywhere that Leratiomyces ceres is hallucinogenic. And of course, it is not. It is considered mildly toxic.
Furthermore, the genus Psilocybe has since been moved from Strophariaceae to Hymenogastraceae, so they are not in the same family anymore.
Besides that, this thread is several years old.
Welcome to the Shroomery.
