My dad gave me his 30-30 Winchester 94 when I was 10 because he got a 30-06. a couple years later I was doing some painting in the summer for fucking $2.50 and hour and I used all the money I saved up to buy a Remington 870 super magnum which I believe is still in his name. Super magnum just means it can take 3.5" shells.
Although the first gun I went hunting with was a .410 shotgun my stepdad owned, we were visiting his family in Missouri and went squirrel hunting. My dumb ass shot at one up in a tree and I didn't have a good grip on the shotgun so it came up and hit me in the nose gave me a bloody nose. But too be fair I was 8 and didn't have any muscle.

i always wondered with shotguns when you hunt squirrels do the pellets ricochet, like do u have to worry about them coming back and hitting you?

Best brush gun IMO. I wouldn't even put a scope on it because the round starts dropping at around 100 yards.
You next rifle should be a .300 win mag. Probably a model 700 doesn't matter the exact model 700 you get. Once you have a 30 30 and a 300 you'll be unstoppable far and near.
My first rifle was a ruger 10-22 I got when I was 6-7. Great 22.

absolutely no they don't ricochet. I mean if you shot them at the water at a low angle or at rocks at a low angle it would probably ricochet. What alot of people don't relieze about shotguns is how fast it loses it's power. Stand 100 yards away from me and I'll shot at you. As long as your not using a slug or buckshot you'll feel something similar to rain hitting you. My point is if you shot a squirrel at 30 yards it's already lost most of it's power by the time it gets to the squirrel and once it hits the object that it would ricochet from takes more power and it still has to make it's way back to you, I don't even think the pellets would have the power to make it back to you. Also when you squirrel hunt they are in the trees, pellets stick into the bark.
You would have a better change of ricocheting while rabbit hunting because they are on the ground running and you usually don't have the processing time to see if there is a smooth rock behind him that could cause the pellets to ricochet.
BTW I shot a punk rabbit this morning for breakfast. Come on biscuits and rabbit gravy.

I ended up with a model 88 winchester .284 lever action. My father won it in a raffle in Texas. Just about the flattest shooting gun there is. Fucker got destroyed when the idiot flooded the basement. It was really suited for open spaces, long distance shots on antelope and such. Not a good choice for Northeastern deer hunting but I did get my buck with it.

sounds good, i was about to go hunting this morning too. I want to hunt deer, squirrel and rabbit all on one go. Basically i plan to go in with a bow for deer, then on the way back look for squirrel and rabbit with my shotgun. my understanding is the rabbits basically hide where you don't want to go (thick brush). Kinda a pain in the ass tho because for deer i need bow, treestand on my back, and would be nice to bring backpack but ill prolly skip that. but then id also need my shotgun because im to scared to just leave that in the truck for someone to breakin and steal, but yah just seems like too much of a load with all that shit. the alternative is to bring a small .22 rifle with hallowpoint shorts, but im worried i won't be able to hit the little bastereds if they are moving fast.
wish i had one of those .410 pistals, those things would be perfect for this

We have rabbit dogs. They run into the bushes(thickets) so you don't have to. Just be careful you don't shoot your dogs. It happens so quick, you have multiple dogs barking then a brown thing runs outta the thicket. You only have a second or maybe two to take your shot. Rookie hunters often don't use that split second to see if it's a rabbit and end up shooting their friends dog. It's sad and it happens all the time. I'd rather miss 1000 rabbits than shoot my dog.
.410 pistol would be fucking terrible for this. It would spread so quick that in the 20 yards the rabbit and 30 years the squirrel is away the pattern would be like 5 feet. So maybe a pellet or two would hit your target, which would be a minor injury to said animal and it would laugh at you while it ran away.
You can easily hit squirrels with a .22. Keep in mind a .22 bullet can continue it's trajectory for I think 2 miles and still have the energy to kill someone. So you need to be in a valley or something like that shooting into another hill. The squirrels won't run they'll set in the tree and look at you. Don't shoot up shoot down at them. So if they are 20 feet up in a tree be 30 feet up the hill from the tree and shoot down at the squirrel. Be sure that nothing is behind the tree you shooting at. nothing even close to it.
The problem with a .22 vs a shotgun is the pellets. I mean rabbits you almost need a shotgun but after you clean the rabbit you must pick 20-30 pellets outta his meat or risk biting into it which fucking hurts. I'd rather go squirrel hunting with a .22. The meat is a little tougher than a rabbit but taste the same without the worry of biting into a pellet. The pellets usually don't go all the way though the animal, like I said before the shotgun loses power so quickly.

I would recommend doing that on private land. Game wardens won't be too kind to you if they stop you and you have multiple guns/weapons on you. They want you to only hunt one thing at a time. They can be some serious dickheads if they want to be. Just a heads up.

My first gun was a 30-30 Marlin. I saved up my money working all summer when I was 14 years old and bought used for a little over $200. It has killed every deer I've shot with it. I haven't cleaned it or shot in at least 15 years now. Disgraceful.

i was actually thinking if i used a .22 that id line my shot up so there was a tree behind the squirrel somewhere so if i miss it hits the tree rather than go 2 miles into nowhere. i guess the risk is ricoshet with the .22 but its hollowpoint subsonic shorts so maybe less likely too. i dunno its tricky because i could miss and hit the tree the squirrels on.
I heard lead can be an issue like with eating game meat, so .22 id want a headshot which could be hard because it would be a youth rifle with no scope. shotgun i have steel ammo, but its a dam 12 gauage which is overkill and like u say id prefer not to pick 100 pellets out of the animal but i dunno so many pro's and cons i should prolly just take something and go, then next time take the other and find out which one works best for me. sucks tho because the closest place is 20mins away, so its a bunch of gas and time just to come home empty handed.
and before someone asks, its youth because i had it from a kid, and i like it because it weighs like 1 lb i can litteraly lift it with my pinky finger easily, with the added bonus that i wouldn't give 2 shits if i dropped it or scratched it. little tricky to get it on my shoulder tho, i basically have to hold it on my cheek instead
shooting from a mountain isn't really an option, i have a hard enough time finding squirrels as it is, to limit myself to a few spots of height i could be sitting there all day. in the city its easy to find them, but these public hunting lands are so hunted out, i think the wildlife just knows to stay away from all those lands.
yah i heard the wardens are assholes but i checked the regulations and it says no problem with taking a bow and gun at the same time. everytime i hunt deer i never see them, everytime i hunt squirrel i never see them. but it always seems like what im NOT hunting i end up seeing, thats why i got this plan to just take both but i think to do it i need a good backpack to mount shit on and some fancy quick disconnect things with rope

I waited until I was 30 until I got my first gun. .45 ACP Springfield XDS. It's fun to shoot and very compact. I just got it for hiking..

My first was a Walther P1. That was during the 2006 election where Martin made the campaign promise to ban handguns if elected. I figured it could be my only chance so rather than a .22 or something practical I got that. The government will probably be taking it away any time now.

1. Unless you are shooting at a rather extreme angle to the ground the .22 will not go far before it drops into the dirt and, even if you are shooting at an extreme angle, by the time it starts falling it is just a ballistic pebble with no real inertia.
2. If you shoot a squirrel with a 12 gauge you won't be picking pellets out of a carcass. You will be cleaning pellets. There will be no squirrel.
3. Good fucking luck with that headshot with a tree behind it routine.

Hell yeah... I had an Enfield .303 I got for $80 at a gun show years back. It was a pre-WWII gun and had been in cosmoline for 50 years... was as accurate as my buddy's AR with a 20" heavy barrel and way more reach. Wish I still had mone, too.

yah if i use the shotgun it'll be with an open choke and ill aim past its head a bit, first couple might destroy them but eventually ill find the sweet spot at least thats the plan anyway, might have to adjust the distance i shoot from too.
most of the land i hunt is really dense so finding a tree behind a squirrel should be pretty easy. i mean its a forest, any tree i just walk an angle around it till something lines up, they are double/tripple plots of 40+ acres behind each other, nothing but tree's, but im basically going to avoid the shots at the top of tree's, ill just wait a little till i see something reasonable.

I don't remember what i pd for mine. Under $100. I was 12 years old and had my older cousin drive me to the gun shop to get it. Ah. The good ol days. Actually that was my 2nd gun. My mom gave me a double barrel .16 gauge the year before.

My first gun was a Thommpson Contender. Its basically a pistol that fires 30-30 rounds. It was a hand me down from my grandfather. It was stolen and I've never seen another in real life.
