Re-poke jar holes? Good idea or bad idea?
    #22490261 - 11/07/15 11:06 AM (8 years, 2 months ago)

Hello,

I have 8 1/2 pint jars in different stages of colonization. It has been about a week and a half (since inoculation) and some are moving along slowly, but others (the majority) only have small patches which seem to be at a stand still. The mycelium looks healthy; a few areas have a yellow/beige tent. My temps seem fine, between 70 and 80 degrees. I am wondering if fresh air exchange may be an issue...I looked over the jar lids and notice most of the holes are not fully open, or perhaps clogged with verm debris when the wet inoculating needle exited.

Would it be advisable to re-poke the holes. Using a sterilized needle; flame sterilize, wiped with alcohol between jars, so as to promote a better air flow?

Thank you!

I bet you are using the wrong jars (they are the tall ones right?) C02 builds up in these jars and they stall out, its the gas exchange thats the issue here. To fix this flip them upside down and hit them on something, this should get them growing again.

A yellow tinge is not good. These are probably metabolites, in which case a contam is most likely on the way.

Yeah, tall half-pints. I will give the flip and smack method a try and keep my eye out for contamination.

Thank you.
