I've been trying to figure out how hard I should make my agar seems that when I cut a wedge that it is hard to pick up with a scalpel, Does anybody have a recipe that is firm enough to pick up but soft enough to get spores to grow on easily? I make a cups worth at a time and am using PastyWhytes tek with the glad type containers.

I generally use around 9.5 grams of agar per 500ml of water.

I work in a biology lab and have to pour and seed plates with various bacterias, and I think the agar we use would be a similar consistency to that that would be good for spores. We use 29g of the agar (which I think now actually may have other things in it too? It's called Nematode Growth Medium Lite I think?) and 1 L of deionized water to make 1 L of agar. Sorry I'm a little high as I type this.

That must be a pre mix with nutrition already added. 29 grams of straight agar to 1 liter of water would be too stiff for spore germination.

Make some up and if its too hard dilute it. You do not have to sterilize it, simply boil in a microwave or some other way and let it set and see if its right for you. When right then sterilize it of course.

Agar is not all the same, so any recipe you see can give different consistencies. The agar I got from a Asian supermarket had far less gelling ability per gram than proper stuff intended for microbiological use.
