True Elm Oyster
    #22489135 - 11/07/15 02:54 AM (8 years, 2 months ago)

I just ordered a LC from Out-grow stated as being elm oyster. The picture also showed a true elm oyster. It should be interesting to see if that is what actually grows from this, or the typical Pleurotus that nearly every vendor calls elm oyster.

I have a white elm oyster from Hacendado if you want a plate. Crazy fast growth. Raced across my plate in a few days.

But is it a true elm oyster? I mean, are the gills decurrent? Many vendors sell Pleurotus as Hypsizygus.
This is what I consider an elm oyster

However, I would love a plate of yours if you could spare it, no matter what it is. I'd like to try some agar to grain. There's so many things I haven't tried yet!

I'm excited to see if you have the real thing! Also wondering if the LC I ordered will be the real deal. The pic they used for the information about it is the Hypsizygus so it should be, but you never know.

I will probably do two or three straw logs of it. Trying to increase my variety at market.

LC is on grain and starting to colonize. Some of the grain I used is an experimental jar to test the PC that I borrowed from family. Never used a PC so I had to test it out. PC'd about 4 or 5 days ago, and no visible contams yet. Must have done something right

The jar I sterilized and inoculated is doing really well. The bag of pre-sterilized rye berries I purchased from Out-grow doesn't show much progress. Not sure why. Will try to get pics. Not sure how they will turn out through the glass. Not sure if I should shake at some point. I mixed the bag under right away, but not the jar. Suggestions?

Jar was looking to be between 25%-50% colonized, so I gave it a shake yesterday. Like a dumbass, I forgot to get a pic before hand. It is already starting to recover, less than 24 hours later. I will take a pic maybe tomorrow and get it posted. The bag of rye berries is beginning to thicken finally. Will post some pics of that tomorrow also.

About 22 hours after last photo. Fast! Hope it does well on supplemented sawdust. The pinks I did on sawdust sucked! Of course there was no supplementation though.

pinks, blues and phoenix never did well on sawdust when compared to kings or shiitake. They prefer straw and the phoenix grow well on chunks of shredded mulch.

I've heard the term mulch used in many different ways, what does it mean in this context?:takingnotes:

What term? like they prefer it? The growth is much more white, faster, and solid vs weak and whispy. It colonizes much faster and solid white on substrates it prefers.

Mulch can describe anything that covers the soil including rocks, sawdust, woodchips, straw or a combination of woodchips and leaves.  What raw material is meant by mulch in this context?

lol too many beers, i missed mulch. Yea hardwood mulch, chipped or shredded hardwood blends. I get mine for free from the city recycling center. Its all the fallen trees on city roads or trimming for power lines that gets chopped up. Not many conifers here in the desert so its mostly hard or soft wood that's mush friendly. My only issue was recently there was a weed mushroom that popped up in my and my friends patch with the same load of mulch. Phoenix conquered but we had a few small tiny white mushies that showed up first. Most likely due to excessive rain this summer and the mulch pile sitting in a dumpster for weeks if not months soaking wet.

Sorry to semi ninja the thread jim, good luck on the elms. My logs are almost fully colonized just waiting on it to finish up before fruiting.

Not a problem. I really think that this is probably a Pleurotus not Hypsizygus as advertised, as fast as it's growing. Should be interesting to see.

my elm logs are colonizing just as fast as my blues, are the Hypsizygus known for significantly slower growth?

I really can't answer that. I've never seen anyone here grow out Hypsizygus. They always turn out to be Pleurotus. I know that Hypsizygus doesn't taste as good as most of the Pleurotus, but I want to do something that not too many people have done. Also, I pick the wild ones here every year. I think they taste ok. It would also be nice to maybe clone some, or make spawn for those who wish to try it.
