Are liberty caps that hard to find?

I kinda gave up on them because I can't seem to find any on my local fields which look like a perfect habitat for them. I'm trying to find other locations to find them in the North East UK but all of them are either too far or not worth it. Is there still time for me to find a decent amount or has the season ended? I haven't had frost yet though.

They can be, particularly the first time or two. How close are you searching to areas you know for sure they are to be found? Not every field and pasture has them, or produces well every year.
They get easier the better you know their habitat and fruiting conditions, but if they are being found in your area currently then the later factor can be made moot.

Attn PWN hunters: If you should come across a bluing Psilocybe matching P. pellicolusa please smell it. If you detect a scent reminiscent of Anethole (anise) please preserve a specimen or two for study and please PM me.

Liberty caps are generally harder to spot than many other types of pasture mushrooms, as they tend to blend in with the background. One good clue is that if you see any of those other typical species in a field (Panaeolus or Protostropharia), there are chances you'll find liberty caps nearby if you search the area good.
Keen eyes and a lot of patience will eventually pay off.
Good luck in the fields!

From my experience.... look in undisturbed grasslands. Fields with moss in them tend to be reliable. Grass that is "dense" tends to be good. Waxcap mushrooms tend to be a good indicator as are Panaeolus species. Where there are sheep, there are libs.
Sometimes they are picky, places that I thought were good don't have many at all. I guess it's trial and error and persistence, once you find the right place though you're sorted. They're definitely out there probably growing near you.

I've been trying to find them since late august and some hunts went on for 6 hours but the most I found was 3 caps.

I often find that once I spot one, I start seeing them everywhere. As if my eyes have to tune in to them.

I found 2 spots with a couple of liberty caps nearly a month ago but every time I check them there are none.

Same here. I can only keep hunting for so long until my eyes start aching from having to focus.
