Rancid and dried Agaricus californicus perhaps? At the very least the reason I haven't been hunting in the 209 yet this season :P

Attn PWN hunters: If you should come across a bluing Psilocybe matching P. pellicolusa please smell it.
If you detect a scent reminiscent of Anethole (anise) please preserve a specimen or two for study and please PM me.

nope not one of them. closest I can seem to find is Chroogomphus, but I don't think that is correct.

Ok but they are not Chroogomphus and from the photo they certainly appear to be rotten Agaricus, growing in A. californicus habitat in an area where that species is one of the three most common mushrooms from summer into the fall or winter rains. There are probably other things it could be but It's a reasonable place to start.

And it has an anulus which while I can't say for sure was initially thick and double rimmed seems plausible.

That looks more like it, minus the gills. But after 4 days of rotting who knows what they looked like originally. Thanks Ran-D. Are you in the central valley too? I've seen a few of your post I thought were local around here. Maybe Newcastle, loomis area ya posted something not too long ago?

Just curious, why A. californicus instead of A. xanthodermus?  I wouldn't be able to tell the difference at that age, usually its A. xanthodermus in my area and A. californicus is relatively rare.  Is it the opposite in your area?

For the record I agree your find is likely an Agaricus species.

Yes I am in the valley.

Local prevalence. It could well be either.

I should say local prevalence unless I've got it backwards, which is always possible.
