P. Semilanceata Pellicle..?
    #22486160 - 11/06/15 01:31 PM (8 years, 2 months ago)

How come liberty caps do this? Protection against insects?

What exactly is it composed of? How does it produce it?

I've been searching and searching and figured the best place was to ask here.

Thanks!

Basically the suprapellis or epicutis if you prefer which is the outer most layer of the cap consists of gelatinised hyphae which are horizontal to the cap surface and arranged parallel to each other, in this species they are 1-2 (-4)µm wide.

As for the purpose of this structure, I believe it's likely that it's merely there to protect the spore bearing hymenium or gills from the elements.

I'm so totally getting better at mycology. I didn't want to say I figured it to be hyphae related and be wrong. I get embarrassed easily when it comes to this stuff. Only hunted 100 miles so far and 6-8weeks reading. Growing edibles or funnies is easy but this is a whole new world in the PNW than some morels and chicken of the woods in MN.

It's the peculiar things like this that amaze me. Such a nerd =/

I saw some azzies that apparently dropped spores on each other, and as it rained harder I noticed the spores move around more in the pellicle. They're halfway up the crest of a hill and obviously the mushrooms generally follow a line down. Would it serve a function such as that? Keep them more or less in their thriving habitat, perhaps?

Thanks again everyone and much love.
