Oyster mushrooms cultivation can cause health problems?

Hello,
I red, that:
"Disadvantages of Oyster mushrooms cultivation are <...> the health problems posed by the prolific spore load generated within the confines of the growing room." ("Growing Gourmet and Medicinal Mushrooms", Paul Stamets)
Can you comment on this please. What exactly are the problems? Can they be cultivated at home?
Thank you.

Apparently your body can develop allergies to the spores of oysters. I think I read a post awhile back where RR said that had happened to him. Maybe he'll chime in with more details.

Very detailed explanation. Thanks. Apparently all mushroom spores are patogenic.

Wow, I definitely want to find out how to keep that from being a problem. I don't want my family having any problems. I've grown them right on the guest bedroom!

Harvest early and the spore load is almost zero. If you wait til they trumpet you're going to have a bad time.

If I am harvesting them in a martha that I have in my basement amd the room is closed off from the rest of the basement, plus I have a hepa in the martha, that should take care of it right?

HEPA in the martha? That will clog asap, unless it's just filtering incoming air. Make sure you harvest while the fruits are curled down and you will very few spores. We have 200 7lb bags in our basement and have no spore problems.

Cool, that's very helpful.

I have just been reading add much as i possibly can to decide how I want to set things up. I am a total newbie to cultivation, but I love mushrooms, and there is a great market for them where I live. I am trying to use coffee grounds right now, and wheat straw for a fruiting substrate. I doubt that I will want to do that for long though. I would love to pick your brain a little for what works best for you.

You should have exhaust pushing the grow chambers air outside. This also helps with fae. When harvesting crop wear a particulate respirator, not a dusk mask but a half mask with hepa cartridges. The 3m one i belive is a p 100 model.

that's not sufficient. I can no longer even be in the hall outside of our grow room without coming down with spore lung. about 3-6 hours after exposure I get a cough and fever. Then another 6 hours after that it's gone. my body reacts to spores germinating in my lungs. yuk.
I can believe people grow that many shrooms in their basement! It's a pretty valid concern 1- for health of the humans in the house. 2- for the structure of the house. Rouge spores could colonize your house! Imagine 'splainin' that to your insurance company.

3M 6000 half face respirator with p100 HEPA filter is what i use ~$15. This is the minimum you should wear. Sometimes i wear my painting respirator with additional organic vapor filters but its a bit heavy and the p100 is lighter to wear and more comfortable.
