Habitat: Where does it grow? 30 minutes South of Dallas backyard in flower beds and sometimes in the grass. The flower beds were a mix of unadulterated cow manure mixed with wood chips which have dried and began to rot so I've noticed these popping up every day especially with the climate and humidity and rain, people say these look like cubes
Gills: Color:early closed caps they are white gills, and as they flatten out and mature over a day or two, the caps are flatter, lighter in color (almond gold to a tanish brown with a darker nipple or head of cap.
Stem: Lengths vary from short and "meaty" to a finger long and meaty BUT HOLLOW , stems are always a pearl white with what looks like little flakes or scales if they are fresh. Older ones aren't as thick from the moisture and resemble wet straw, thin and hollow
Cap: Diameter range from 1cm to the size of a grown mans palm, depending on how long I let them mature. colors of caps are goldish bronze when appearing( closed ) with short stem, when they open they turn from the goldish bronze color to a tan color, depending on humidity, they might appear darker tan with a gold nipple or even sometimes you can see the spores through the really wet ones and the caps are a tanish gold with shades of blueish black, round , bell shaped at young age, flattening out to a dinner plate look as the sun gets to them, etc.
Spore print color: fresh picked flat headed 2 day old print was collected over a 24 hour period. The results were a chocolate brown with shades of black and almost purple tents to them where the spores smeared across the paper. Very important!
Bruising: When the caps are starting to flatten out and turn a more tan color, If pinched between fingers, the top of the caps will leave a blackish blue fingerprint/impression instantly. The stems don't really bruise but just look a shade darker from squeezing the moisture inside of it out.
Other information: Scent of the mushroom, When grazing my backyard, I know if they are present bc I smell a very distinct mushroom auroma in the air. I have a large backyard that's completely landscaped with a multitude of different plants but all in wood chips/manure mixed flower beds. I also have two large dogs, a lab and a greyhound who tend to "graze" in areas for a few hours then if the weathers right, I notice colonies a week or two later sprout up. I've taken a ton of pics so if you need more let me know or please ask any questions you may have! I'm extremely curious as to what these are bc they are EVERYWHERE!!! (But only for a few weeks, twice a year: before and after the summer season when it's getting up to only 85 F every day and here in Dallas it's extremely rainy and humid.
