Habitat:
Terrestrial; Found in deciduous woods, growing scattered or clumped (cespitose) straight out of the ground; Michigan

Gills:
The gill color is whitish to pinkish; the young gills are covered by a cortina-like web. The gills are attached to the stem.

Stem:
Whitish to pinkish (peachy); some with yellow bruising; somewhat thick in comparison to cap size; slightly enlarged at base; about 1 cm in diameter; flesh whitish and fibrous

Cap:
1.5 - 4 cm in diameter; light orangish to pinkish (peachy) color; small brownish scales; lined (striated) margins; flesh whitish

Spore print color:
Whitish

Bruising:
Slight yellowish bruising.

Other information:
Scent nondistinct.

Looks like Armillaria to me, albeit a very fat stemmed Armillaria. Are you sure it wasn't growing off of buried wood?

They were certainly concentrated near trees, so it's possible they were growing out of buried roots from those nearby trees.
