First time longboarding

So I purchased this badass longboard with top mount trucks last week. It's this one by Riviera. I have never owned nor rode a skateboard in my life and I have some nooby questions.
1. How do people ride around the city so comfortably? Some of these sidewalks are all kinds of jacked up. Like I never realized how shitty they were until I tried riding around on my longboard. These things look like death traps. Do I need to ride fast to go over the cracks, bumps, steep dips from the sidewalk to the road? It's scary looking but people just ride around with ease man.
2. Where to practice? I've been trying to get use to balancing, turning, and stopping in an empty parking lot but I know that can only go so far. I have to get out of that parking lot at some point. I'm just scared of crashing in front of stopped traffic at red lights or running into people (which I've almost done once already lol).
3. How do I not look like such a noob? I don't mind wearing a helmet as it feels like the smart thing to do, but I still give tiny baby pushes while I see other people hauling ass around the city.
I'm just tired of walking everywhere and a friend of mine convinced me to try it out. I love being able to move faster but I don't want to have to pick up my board every time I see some shady looking sidewalks or feel uncomfortable riding in certain areas. I want to get better that way I can hopefully get into some downhill longboarding competitions or just freeride.

when it comes to skateboard/longboarding you're always going to look like a noob until you get the hang of it.

Need good core strength. if you have a weak core you will look like you are all over the place . Find your footing and learn to roll out of falls

Find some mellow hills to start with. Ive been skateboarding well over half my life. But i only picked up longboarding maybe 2yrs or less ago. I fell in love the first day borrowing a friends board to bomb some parking garages downtown.
Yes you need to be going faster to not get stuck in big cracks so thats something you will learn with practice.
I mainly longboard for a rush. I find the steepest hills possible and try to go as fast as i can. My top speeds probably been about 35mph (car behind me to gauge speed). Which isnt much compared to some videos i watch online, but its still pretty good speed.

Practice makes perfect dude. Once you get the hang of it you can make it around town just as fast as a bike

Oh and i suggest making some longboarding gloves. Im too tired to upload a photo of mine but they are very simple to make. They are called sliding gloves. Google for simple tutorials.
Sliding gloves can help you maintain balance by dragging your gloves across the ground. I enjoy sliding gloves so i can do some long ass powerslides. Lot of fun..

Most people learn skating as a determined little kid, so keep that in mind. Speed and learning when to lift your weight up helps for the bumps and cracks. In a few months you'll be popping ollies and shove its over those cracks that seem impossible to get over right now.

Well this is all encouraging. Thanks for the tips. I'll look into sliding gloves and hopefully I can find a parking garage that I won't get kicked out of. I can't imagine going 35mph yet but I can't wait to get there! I wish I did learn as a kid so I wouldn't be as nervous about it. Rolling out of falls is my next step as I don't want to land face first or break my wrists. My core strength is a bit sketch now so I hope it will improve.
