The pick/snip controversy?
    #22483297 - 11/05/15 09:33 PM (8 years, 2 months ago)

Hi guys, heard a lot of conflicting ideas about whether you should pull liberty caps out of the ground, or snip them with scissors.

I've heard pulling them damages the mycelium, and cutting can make the stem butt rot and damage mycelium - a screwed either way thing.

So assuming specifically for liberty caps, if I want to keep the mycelium healthy for future shroomers, what should I do? Opinions?

Snipping is marginally better in my opinion. Mushrooms have made it this long with people grabbing rude chunks of them throughout the ages, so they're more rugged than we generally give them credit for, but if you can baby a mycelial network, why not baby it?

With Psilocybe semilanceata it quite possibly makes no discernible difference. The species in question comes readily free from the grass mat, soil and grass root ball from which it sprouts, leaving little possibility to pull up significant substrate or mycellial mass during harvest.

While it is certainly possible that leaving basal material attached to necrotize or rot may encourage potentially harmfull bacteria or other pathogens to the organism, and doubtless this sometimes happens, there is exactly zero evidence to suggest that this is often harmful to the oraganism and there is doubtless far more such tissue to die, rot and encourage pathology when e.g. the mushroom grows, matures, dies and rots unfound by humans far more often than not in the wild. Food for thought.

Attn PWN hunters: If you should come across a bluing Psilocybe matching P. pellicolusa please smell it.
If you detect a scent reminiscent of Anethole (anise) please preserve a specimen or two for study and please PM me.
