Dunk & Roll Elm oyster cakes (roll with verm or sawdust)
    #22479328 - 11/05/15 02:52 AM (8 years, 2 months ago)

So I'm starting out and did a few "test cakes" with a free Elm oyster syringe I got from a vendor.

I just did your basic BRF cakes but in one I added some wood chips and the other I added some sawdust (softwood, I know, I found out later).

I'm going to dunk them for 24hours but was wondering if I should roll them in verm? sawdust? 50/50? And then just throw them in a SGFC or would a monotub with perlite be ok too? (I only have monotubs with polyfill right now)

Also shiitake question: Do you cold shock (put in refrigerator) for 3 days, dunk for a few hours, and then put into SGFC/monotub? Would I also roll in verm or softwood sawdust?

Again, these are just little beginner experiments..so any suggestions would be appreciated! I did noticed that the cakes with wood chips colonized much faster than the softwood sawdust. It even looks healthier, bright white, with a lot eating the top layer of verm. While the sawdust infused cake has yellow metabolites so it seems to be struggling more.

I wouldn't roll in sawdust unless its sterilized. I'm sure verm is all you need to roll in.
