Stamet's "Steeping" Method of Grain Spawn Production

In Stamet's "Growing Gourmet and Medicinal Mushrooms" he describes two methods of spawn production. The first is the traditional 12 hr soak followed by sterilization at 15psi popular on the shroomery. The other is what he refers to as "steeping" the grains for 1 hour in boiling water followed by standard pressure cooker sterilization. Is anyone familiar with the second method? I'd like to give it a try, it would eliminate the 12 hr soak.

I soak mine for 12-18 hours then full boil them for 10 minutes, then let them steam off. I thought it was the standard procedure, that’s how RogerRabbit does it in the videos any ways. If you really hate soaking I'd say give it a shot but I'd suspect your going to have alot of popped seeds and a starchy mess.

I've had success with boiling, but it's a lot easier on a gas stovetop where you have better control of the heat. If you're popping them like above said, it's not right. I just simmered them for about 30 minutes, dumped them into a mesh strainer, then placed them in my jars to go into the PC.
You might have better colonization times with the soak, but the boil/simmer method does work.

There are many ways to skin a cat ive been doing no soak prep with oats for a few months now and it works just fine and does not affect colinazation times as stated above. Just keep an eye on your grain while boiling so you dont have a sticky mess and youll be fine.ivr also been playing around with a no soak no simmer oat prep like the rye prep in ggmm where ypu add oats and water gypsum to a jar pc and your done.ive done 3 batches so far and im impressed

I soak fir 18-24 hours, then simmer fir 49 min, then boil for 10 min. The grain gets really nice and plump. I then pc fir anywhere from 2 hours on up, depending on how much i have in the pc

49 minutes? Do you really set your timer to 49 minutes? That's hilarious. I tried that once, the simmer then boil technique and it ended up with exploded grains. I had to buy a bunch of different brands before I could even get the soak/boil to work, I always wanted to do Fooman's because I'm lazy but I just couldn't figure it out, always burst all my grains.

Yes I do this always. But not all grains can handle the heat. I find that millet will be a bitch to break apart even by soaking let alone "steeping". Needless to say I will not use it anymore especially since I found popcorn as the perfect substrate ( we don't get rye grains in my country so those might be good too). Instead of boiling I PC the corn at 10 psi for about 30 minutes give or take. Im still testing what time is best but last I tried it I did 50 minutes and most of the corn burst. Its still colonising ok but I prefer intact corn as some people have problems with stalling with burst popcorn. Pretty sure 30 minutes will give me good results.
