hello all! glad to have joined a great informative community. little about me I'm from the sunshine state, recently moved to go Ol' Virginia, Coast. I'm no expert on mycology or ID what I find ( most of the time) I plan to contribute to the board any way that I can and also use the the tools provided to enlighten myself. I'm certain from time to time I will be asking for some help and on the other side offering. In my recent efforts to find some actives I have stumbled across numerous other species none of which are active. (no surprises there) certainly it seems that this time of year there maybe be a couple of actives I may find. I have some questions about this area I'm in. SE VA, I will certainly be expanding my area once the seasons change. but for now I'm looking around this area. I cam across a few mushrooms that I thought may be active but not sure. some the more that I research the less confident I am.
Any how if there are some people in this neck of the woods feel free to drop a line and say hello

welcome to both VA and the shroomery. read the annual ovoid threads and--if you're into chasing the white whale--the caerulipes threads; you'll learn all you need to know.
however, Gymnopilus species grow closer to you and at this time of the year. other than that, in a past life i've found cubes in one county that i assume is just south of you (and then over the border as well).
if you're really into finding ovoids, use your trip(s) to the James this fall to scout habitat...perhaps you'll get super lucky in the fall, but spring is the real deal season for them.
good luck

hey Relic, yea that was the plan, to check out James river area, I was thinking that if they are infact there that they may have hada semi recent flush with the dipping temps. but I was more curious if any one has found them along it or its tributaries as it is a very tidal controlled river, meaning that a good portion of the lower James has some brackish water. I loked on googled earth and was planning out a course that is until there was a huge pile up on 64 today right out side of Wburg.....
