Albedo Modification
    #22476101 - 11/04/15 11:43 AM (8 years, 2 months ago)

Does anyone have any opinions/ideas/links relevant to albedo modification? I don't mind if they are ways to decrease the earths albedo, but I'm mostly looking for methods of increasing it. I've looked at a few methods already. Focusing on the atmosphere I have looked at aerosols and cloud generation (I've only really seen cloud generation suggested in a marine setting). I like the cloud generation idea, the aerosol idea kind of scares me (though it shouldn't I guess we pump shit into the atmosphere all the time). For oceans I've seen the above cloud idea and the creation of blooms of organisms that have a high albedo (Kind of seems like it might fuck the ocean's ecosystem, yet again though not like we don't already fuck with it). Changing infrastructure and roofing to a standardized high reflective surface seems good, but then it would always be bright as fuck (especially in areas with dense housing/streets).

Space based solutions don't really change the albedo of the earth as much as change the intensity of light as it travels to earth but it seems sketchy as all fuck also.

Overall it seems like people say it all isn't economically feasible, so by all means throw any and all suggestions you think of/know about.

I know one way is to change the material we use to finish our roofing. Meaning all roofing in the world. If we were to replace shingles (which are typically asphalt or tile, low albedo materials) with another source of a higher albedo, something white or grass even, it would raise the overall albedo of the planet.

I assume this would be with the goal to put some sort of bump in the road against global warming, ya?

Yeah...and roofing is like, what, 0.12% of the planet's surface? It's a sympathetic idea, but in terms of energy management and climate change, it's a better idea to tile those roofs with solar panels instead of covering them with tinfoil.
