Over-salted foods and snacks
    #22474455 - 11/04/15 04:12 AM (8 years, 2 months ago)

Does anybody else find certain snacks or foods to be wayyyyy too salty? Like those pretzels you buy in a bag. Or those salted roasted sunflower seeds. The salt content is wayyyyyyy too high in those for me to be considered tasty.

Is anybody else bothered by how salty they are, or find other foods to be oversalted?

Yeah, but I think sometimes the amount of salt is there so you can purposely rub some off to find your own personal amount that tastes good. Or at least that it was I tell myself.

I mean, are there really people who think they taste good? Cause I've seen videos of people putting entire handfuls of those salty sunflower seeds in their mouth and then spitting the seeds out as they chew at the same time, and I just can't imagine how somebody would enjoy it without thinking it was too salty.

Depends on the snack  for me because some snacks are meant to be pretty salty. But then theres other snacks where its like it was bathed in brine then rolled in salt.

I'm the same way,

Like I enjoy beef jerky (or any kind of jerky), I enjoy prosciutto, I enjoy clams, I enjoy BBQ, I enjoy pho, I even like KFC, which are all loaded with salt. But IDK, for some reason that doesn't taste excessively salty to me like salted pretzels and sunflower seeds does.

I like some shit to be very salty, like potato chips.  The amount of salt on those sunflower seeds is fine by me.

The other day I was at the grocery store and I saw a bag of pretzels that was like double salted.  I forget how they worded it.  It looked excessive, even by my standards.

It just means you need to drink more beer.

But yeah, overall I think we Americans are developing a less and less refined palate. Everything seems to be getting sweeter and saltier. I remember when Gatorade used to not really be all that sweet. Now it's like practically syrup. And yeah some of the chips and other packaged snacks are just crazy salty/ MSG

I like really salty, over seasoned food anyway. So it's not something to complain about as far as I'm concerned

I find salt to be the most revolting of all food flavorings. It has it's place, but people these days use WAY too much. Maybe I'm just sensitive to it, but most food from chains the saltiness is gag worthy.

Well the rule is, for cooking in general is
:if it tastes bland, there is not enough salt
:if it tastes like salt, there is too much.
I think people generally try to undersalt a bit
hence the reason why there are salt shakers at tables
but overdone salt is worse than underdone

The only place excess amounts of salt belong are on meats prior to cooking or bread loafs ready to be baked.

A little is enough on almost anything else. Meats and starches are the only foods that need them. Not after, always before.
