Australia's site blocking/internet censorship
    #22474417 - 11/04/15 03:12 AM (8 years, 2 months ago)

Just curious what the AUS people here might have to say about it. I recently started using a VPN (mostly because we've already gotten several notices from my ISP about my pirating and I know they aren't just going to keep saying "you got caught" and do nothing about it and I'm not going to stop) and have been bouncing all over the world. Never used Australia until a few hours ago, and quickly noticed there are quite a few sites filtered. Literally never ran into this issue until I went Australian.

Is it just because I'm using sites I'd need to hide from my ISP? Or does this happen on sites that you should theoretically not have any reason to have your access blocked? Am I just stumbling onto the few who almost no one uses, or is this becoming an actual issue? I Googled before this thread and it seems this is pretty recent.

Im not sure man? I've never had an issue. I don't think we have blocked sites. I pirate alot and don't use a vpn. Only tor for DM. What sites are you trying to use?

File sharing sites, such as: http://turbobit.net/8f1m8j4mfcn3.html

Yes it's pron, but 100% legal porn. I started running into this issue left and right. It has happened no where else at all. Click the link, scroll to the download link, and see if you even get the message to save to your computer, don't even have to try to save it, it happens before I have that option. Maybe ti's just my VPN, if you don't mind, confirm it for me.

Also note: that is not one of the things I tried to get (not to say I don't love porn) I just did a quick search to find a video on a server I knew to allow me to download from other places. Austraila seems to be on lockdown.  I now it recently didn't work on and gave that message.

I never heard we had stuff censored before..

I never had an issue, as long as you're not accessing anything really dodgy. I guess there's too many pedos to worry about down here and they're always looking for that

I always thought we were able to jack off to whatever we want, only issue I've had is how fucking slow it is compared to the rest of the world (where I live anyway).

I could open that page no worries, I didn't want to click anywhere else (my missus will have my balls) sorry. Seems OK up to there this end.

you meant from here right?

Yeah pretty much. If you can access it, maybe it's just ISP related or some shit. Some of your ISPs allwow it, some don't. I've ran across a few so far that say the connection is block even though I can download the file from another country.

It just seemed really odd and when I gogoled it to see why, I recently learned AUS had started cracking down on pirating and such.

There was that Dallas Buyers Club(?) thing but I don't think anything has come of it since it was announced they would be tracking people down here. I think they can't do anything anyway for that.

Interesting if that's what's happening. Hopefully you can find somewhere to download your pron.

I do and it's not just porn (the remedy is simple, don't use AUS as the VPN country ) it was the only relevant example I could pull up from memory (deleted history). I honestly can't remember the sites I kept seeing it on and the most were not porn related all. But out of all the countries I have available to me, that one is literally the ONLY one that provides that message. Which to me means, that shit is blocked in that country.

All good man I was just giving you shit

That's interesting to know about the VPN's for you though, seems like there is some sort of filtering going on from somewhere. (maybe they really are watching us... or you)??

The last few weeks both chrome and firefox have been blocking torrent sites. I use a vpn and had to use IE to get around it. Not sure if this would happen with non file sharing sites though, or at least at this point.

What VPN are you using SS, I need to find a good free one. Tor by itself just doesn't cut it anymore for anonymity.

Not related to your thread, but what VPN do you use, and was it easy to set up? can you get decent downloading speeds?

i stopped torrenting a couple months ago because i kept getting arnings from comcast and they said they can throttle my bandwidth. looked into VPNs a little bit, but they seem very, very slow

I paid for one, I didn't go with a free one. I have in the past and found them to be pretty worthless, the few times I managed to find a working server, it was slower than dial up.

I have TorGuard, and it's pretty damn good. I basically get the same speed using it that I get when I don't. Also seems to overall be very stable and reliable. On two nights it has cut off at some point while I'm sleeping, and they had to do emergency maintenance on their authentication server the other day which messed things up, other than that, I've been connected 24/7 without getting kicked out. The package I got was the VPN Pro one, which is like 10 dollars a month.

If you're overly paranoid about it cutting off overnight and not noticing it, you can even program it to shut off programs if you get kicked out. I'm not quite that paranoid so I haven't bothered setting it up.
