I use an alcohol burner after discovering what a huge pain in the ass a Bic is for a couple dozen flamings. Works great, and only requires one hand to come out of the SAB.

Propane torches ftw!
On a serious note though... maybe you could smoke meth with a bacti-cinerator?

Butane or propane torch does the job quicker but requires both hands Alcohol burner takes a while but only requires one hand
Which takes the cake?

Now on the subject. I bought an alcohol lamp when I first started but it turned out to be a humongous pain in the ass. Then I was strolling down the DIY section of a supermarket and I saw this beauty
Fast, no mess if you knock it over, no mess to refill, half the price and you dont have wicks to change. I just love it. Even with the thin scalpel I could never get it glowing red with alcohol lamp. Now I use a thicker scalpel ( I find them better for agar) and it glows in a few seconds. I also love that its hands free. This model you can even adjust the flame, air intake (decrease this for a milder flame) and child lock. Awesome

Propane will probably last longer. Theyre about 12 bux american for the torch part and 2-3 bux for the bottles. I have yet to have to change my bottle, Ive been using the torch since spring

I use a Butane Torch that's old and has been dissasembled and put back together. Sometimes even after I let go of the trigger a lil flames still come out, first time I figured that out I had set it down on my bed and now there is a hole in it. Smacked my hand on the flame to stop it and there was burning plastic on my hand. Took it like a champ.

I've used both. They both work great but butane torches are more compact and I prefer them for that reason. A lot of butane torches also come with a soldering iron atachment that works great for poking GE holes in plastic lids and for cutting holes in tubs.

Does the butane hold up for a while or does it run out kinda fast? And does the trigger have a lock?

I've been using this one for about a year I think. I'm still using the same bottle of butane it came with. I have to fill it every month or two depending on how much sterile work I do. Yeah it has a trigger lock.

Mine is butane but I think anything along the lines of jet lighter works for anything thicker than a syringe.

I love Muda's SAB
I might pick up one of those butane torches sometime if the price is right. I worry about tipping over my propane torch

That SAB is just a memory now. I'm renovating my basement and all my myco stuff had to move upstairs. Now I'm stuck using this piece of shit.

Propane. The big blue burnzomatic thing.
On the lighters packaging it says "if you use butane" which makes me think other gases might work on it.The guy in the store gave me butane. Works well enough

Just wanted to say propane and butane torch’s don’t take both hands. I personally light mine and leave it run on low. Most brands have some sort of trigger lock, just make sure not to knock it over.

I used to lock my trigger and leave my torch running but now I just light it as I need it. I've had too many close calls.
