Contaminated spore prints 2 part question
    #22472083 - 11/03/15 05:07 PM (8 years, 2 months ago)

Hello, a little background. I've grown shrooms a few times, but I am still a newbie and it's been a while.
2 years ago I grew some shrooms in a not even close to sterile environment. Still got some mushies from it though, and made lots of spore prints.
Recently I tried using one of those spore prints and made a dozen 1/2 pint BRF cakes. Every single one of them are showing great mycellium growth, and every single one is also showing great green mold growth. lol
Some cake have green mold at all four inoculation points, some from just one of them.
I was pretty damn meticulous about creating the cakes, sterilizing them and inoculating them, so i'm pretty certain all contaminates are coming from the spore print itself.

So my questions are. What are my options with these contaminated cakes?
Should I cut off all infected parts and bury them in my yard? Should I attempt to fruit? Is it a completely lost cause? If I can do anything useful with them, I'd love to at least try.

Second question is, what should I do on my next attempt? I still have multiple spore prints, I don't think any of them are likely to be free of contams. Is there any point in trying to grow with any of these or is this a completely sunk cost?
A few additional details. I used half of a fairly large and very heavy print for the first syringe, it was black with spores. After doing a lot of reading I learned that using much much less spores could help in my case because you are reducing chances of getting mold spores. Along those lines using just a drop of liquid can help too. I used much more than a drop typically (mostly because I couldn't control the syringe that accurately.

If I made the two above changes would it be worth it to try with another dozen cakes? Is there anything else I can do to help improve my chances?

One final detail I don't have a pressure cooker, so I don't think agar is a possibility for me.

Thank you!

Clean up your spores on agar.

While I have done a lot of reading about mushrooms, I really haven't read too much about agar simply because I didn't think I had the required gear for it.
I might be mistaken, but I thought agar pretty much required a pressure cooker.
If agar is a viable option without a pressure cooker I will look into it, and learn how to "clean up my spores on agar" If it is not an option for me are there any other options?

Pretty much everything in this hobby calls for a PC lol

Agar can theoretically be microwaved I believe, but I know little about that as I've never done it or looked deeply into it.

You could always buy new spores from a vendor, and if it's a good vendor they'll likely be clean.

Thanks for the responses.

After looking into agar without a PC it does indeed seem possible. I plan on seeing if I can make any magic happen with some myc from my least infected cake.
That still leaves me with 11 more infected cakes that I would like to try and use in some way. I have no high hopes for them other than maybe learning a bit.

I was considering putting a few under fairly intense light to see if that could kill or at least weaken the green mold.

Burying some outdoors to see if mother nature might be able to save them.

And maybe even doing some kind of pretty intense peroxide wash in hopes of killing the green mold, but not 100% killing the myc and then again burying outside (in a different area obviously).

Does anyone have any ideas on anything else one might try? or thoughts on my ideas?

P.S. I realize that any thoughts on my ideas are likely to be. "all of them are completely pointless and will be 100% ineffective." but I figured no harm in asking right?

:whathesaid:

If you can't get or make microwave agar work, you can try some cornmeal or BRF agar substitute plates.

Drop as small a quantity as you can from the sporeprint/new syringe onto the plate in the still air box.  When you see healthy mycellial growth, transfer it to another plate.  If it look clean there, either use a heavily sterilized oster blender setup (ie masor jar with the blade submerged in boiling water for 90 minutes) or drag the needle through the mycellium, squirt sterile water in, and suck it up with a syringe.  Then noc your cakes.  Keep your hands from getting above the plate at any point.

You can try another print too.  Using less of the print and less inoculant is probably a good idea.  Try not to take spores from the very edge of the print where the cap may have been resting on the foil, and don't do a lot of cakes.  Testing your syringe on a BRF/cornmeal plate would also be a good idea.

I'm not 100% certain cornmeal plates work well without a pressure cooker, but I think it's VERY likely they do work well since the cornmeal mush is wet with no airspace, therefor will conduct heat extremely well compared to say, a PF cake with cornmeal.

I would steam 90 minutes + to be safe.

Also, I would try as many of these at the same time as possible.  Microwave agar, agar substitute, and making a new syringe with a different printer and inoculating say, 4 cakes.

--------------------

I spawned some popcorn casings and had double-overlay cause I didn't put enough hydrogen peroxide in my automated aquarium mister.  I only got one mushroom so I cut off the head part where the seeds fall from and put it in a jar of LC and sprayed it all over a tin of PF cakes I made with gravel, cardboard, and bisquick in my microwave.  I think it will be good cause B+ is so potent.
Triggered yet?

Only a square would say "a cube is a cube."

No, this does not look right...
