Everything was going fine. Now this. What is this?!!! There was nothing this morning, and now it's everywhere. Is there any hope, or am I screwed? I'm so bummed. Thanks in advance.

Let me add that the fruiting chamber is in the room where I sleep, with my clothes, etc. I have an air filter running on high at the moment. Do I have anything to worry about, health-wise? I brought it outside and took the contaminated trays out of the terrarium, hoping that the remaining casings will at least produce some salvageable fruits.
Thanks.

Also, I tried to swab the cake with a Q-Tip and nothing smeared. Not sure what that means, but I saw people mention that on a couple other posts.

I don't think there is anything to worry about health-wise.
I'm not sure what those are; I almost wanna say bacterial blotch?
That or mouse droppings...
If it keeps growing I'd make it go away.

Also, re: does not wipe off -- I'm not going to preclude bruising.
It just looks like a strange manifestation of it is all.

Thanks for the quick response, micro.
The only thing that freaks me out is the fact that it spread so damn quickly (matter of a few hours) and that it appeared on cakes, casings, and fruits. It's difficult to know what to do better next time, since I don't know what went wrong...

Just a thought:
Is it possible that this could have been caused by continuous dripping of water for a few hours? I tried to save space in my shotgun fc by using a mesh wire locker shelf. It is possible that water dripped from the wire rack onto the trays below. Then to explain the cake on top, I was thinking water pooled up?
I have no idea if water is even able to bruise mycelium, let alone until it's black like this. It just doesn't really seem like a contaminant. It hasn't spread since I noticed it, and it popped up pretty much simultaneously on cakes, casings, and fruits alike.
My apologies for the repeated posts, but this is sort of a crucial "go or no go" moment. Thank you.

no, i understand
and yes; bruising could possibly make sense if the water hit it with some force
why not just see if it grows or gets better?

Looks like bruising, but I've never seen bruising quite like that.

As of this morning, no growth of the "black" stuff. Looking more closely, I see that the black is just a really concentrated blue. Making me think even more that it's bruising. I isolated the effected trays into mini monotubs just in case by flipping empty trays over the top and taping them on (leaving a little space for FAE).
Pins have continued to grow , so I'm just going to grow them out. If they fruit completely and there's no visible deformation, are they safe to eat? Also, is the fruit with dark spots coming from the cake (last picture) safe to eat? Just want to make sure that at least THOSE are bruising and not some black mold of some sort.
Thanks again. I'm not sure what I would do without this website, but I'm pretty sure it wouldn't involve growing mushrooms.

Picture 2... Bruising? What's wrong with you guys lol. It's DARK BLACK, and obviously not spores. Never heard or seen mushroom mycelium bruise pure black..

Here are some better pictures:

It seems to be a discoloration of the mycelium and fruits directly, not something growing on top of them. Extreme bruising?
Edit: It is possible that the dark blue of bruised mycelium, mixed with the brown of the exposed substrate, could be making it look black. Whatever it is, I'm still wondering what caused it. I didn't really experiment too much with the anything, besides adding that shelf (which I have since removed).

It's probably some kind of contamination that is causing that bruising. Mycelium doesn't just bruise or act like that for no reason.
How does it smell?

Smells fine, like mycelium. No more bruising now than there was since I first noticed it. The trays that I brought outside and "dubtubbed" seem to have stalled, as most of the pins are starting to look like aborts. I picked a few mushrooms from the cake. Is this safe to eat? It's bruised, but it really just looks like a water droplet did it or something. Then again, I've learned all that I know about mushrooms from a website, so what do I know?
