Refrigerate brf cakes?
    #22471482 - 11/03/15 02:56 PM (8 years, 2 months ago)

So, I'm wanting to inoculate some jars, but will be leaving for about a month at around the time they will be fully colonized... I should probably just wait, but is it possible to put them in the fridge when they are close to colonized and slow them down so they will be ready when I get back? I know that drying out can be an issue, but perhaps i could let them colonize, dunk them, and then put them back in jars and put them in the fridge? That might be asking for contamination but if they are fully colonized it might not be too bad... I could possibly cut the time down to two weeks gone if needed. Thanks!

Either wait or stick them in the fridge without taking them out of the jars first.

Are you inoculating with a spore syringe? If you're only going to be away for a month you can probably get away with leaving them out at room temp. Normal colonization time is anywhere from 2 - 3 weeks (can vary +/- ) and then you'll want them to consolidate for at least a week (some people like to leave them for 2 weeks). So based on that I think you'll be fine.
