golden oyster, second flush.
    #22470511 - 11/03/15 11:08 AM (8 years, 2 months ago)

I'm testing out this golden oyster culture I've had hanging around for a while.  It seems to want to give side pins, with one little on on the top.  I'm not sure if I should let it be or birth it into a small plastic bag so I can cut some holes for the pins to pop out.

:confused2:

Well I put er in a baggie and poked a hole near each pin... pins are getting a golden yellow hue now, lots of condensation in bag...
wish me luck

Here is a shot of the now birthed Golden Oyster cake.  It seems to be doing fine after (the lc syringe was kept in a fridge for a year).  I found one little maggot crawling around near one of the clusters and there was one little black gnat under the plastic.  I didn't have any problems on my last grow with gnats, I'm not sure what I should do at this point to discourage the presumably already laid eggs from ruining things.  The maggot was about 1 mm long and was white, the gnat was about the same length, very small.

Probably not much you can do about the gnats now other then trying to keep any more from finding/accessing the cake.

I looked at a couple of guides online that said the shape of these mushrooms indicate they are ready to harvest:

Do they look ready?

Definitely look ready to me, i prefer to pick before the cap margins flip upward.

So 43 wet grams was the harvest weight.  From probably ~150 dry grams of millet and a couple handfuls of sawdust.

I killed another gnat last night and they didn't show up this morning.  I def. would not grow these without some screening in the future.

Time to cook them and see what happens...  I have butter and olive oil, I kind of want to keep it super simple because I want to taste the actual flavor of the mushroom.  maybe I can do one batch with olive oil and the second batch with olive oil and butter...

Evil gnats :mad2:

Screens would probably help, consider sticky traps or a booze bottle with sugar water in it too. It's what bartenders use to lower the contam rate while the pour spouts are uncapped.

I personally like all mushrooms in butter but oil does seem to have less flavor to it. I heard golden are really delicious too but have yet to try them.

I watched a few videos on cooking these including this one:

Cliffnotes: fry them in oil and butter on low heat for about 4 minutes.

I just went with olive oil alone.

This is what they looked like, almost all the yellow color was gone but not quite.

I ate them without salt or anything.  My expectations were extremely low as I did not like the smell of the mushrooms as they were growing.

I don't do a lot of cooking with gourmet mushrooms so take my review with a grain of salt.  Plus I'm only dealing with a few bites of food

They were :awesome:, tasted a little like wine for a second...

I cooked some until they were brown, they are really good that way too, a different flavor though.  I'll have to cook some king oysters and others some time soon to try to make a comparison.

I tried popcorn oysters for the first time as duxelles on crackers and it was pretty good!

It probably does have a lot to do with how you cook them. I can take anything and make it disgusting

Warm weather oysters are not really considered a choice species either. Many people swear by P. Ostreatus and other species.

Second flush coming in!

I put the sub back into the pp5 bottle to see how it would handle.  The side pins are stunted/stalled.

I put a screen on top, the gnats are back at it!

The pins do need very high humidity to form or they will dry out. I have that issue a lot when i strip the bag off sawdust blocks instead of cutting them.

Hopefully with the screen and the microenvironment in the bottle they will pin well and not be eaten.

I put a simple mosquito screen over the top of the pp5 jar, it reduced air flow a lot and the fruits are not happy about it!
Also I'm getting stunted side-pins.  Clearly not the way go!  These are on the kitchen table with pretty decent air flow from open windows.

Yeah the only species I can think of off the top of my head that hates carbon dioxide as much as oysters are hericium spp..

You could build a SGFC and line it with screen  Thats what I'm going build to put my outdoor oysters in when it warms up. I have seen others use SGFC with success for outdoor golden oyster sawdust blocks and would like to add the screen for protection from all the damn bugs outside. They work for almost any common species for fruiting so it's kinda useful to have a SGFC laying around.

I harvested the clusters which did not want to continue to develop even after being given more fresh air.  I put the cake outside on top of the compost heap and the third flush is ready after only 2 days and they are perfectly formed and healthy and the yield is much greater than the second flush.

The amazing effects of fresh air!

Yep, those oysters sure like FAE

Good to hear you found the right climate for them! Now you gotta decide how you want to cook them.
