Exact Sterilization Temps For PF Tech?

I have a fairly simple question but apparently it's hard to come across a set answer. And that is What is the sterilization temperature for a brown rice cake using the PF Tech? I use the boiling method haven't used a PC yet. I want to try and up my success rate with the boiling method by putting a meat thermo in a so called dummy cake in each pot to monitor were I need to go with the temp. I anyone has a approximate number(within 10 degrees or so) please let me know because I think that possible it's not so much how long you boil the cakes but the steady high temps, and these numbers would help me look further into it. Thanks, PINKEYE

You boil your substrate without any pressure in water ? If yes, then I would guess that the temperature should be exactly 100 ? Celsius at sea level.

Thanks, That's what I figured but I wanted to ask around, oh and to answer your other question yes I do boil my substrate with no pressure and get this I use the open lid technique, well sort of I use open mouth drinking glasses about a .25 in thick and duct tape a foil lid on there then cover again with foil, it's a lot of work but I started out this way and just haven't switched to a better method on average out of my 10 experiments I've had a 70%-75% sucess rate, I have a friend who has done more experiments than me with actuall kerr jars and lids and has had 2 cake contam. I think as far as the pf tech is concerned no pressure is needed. What do you think Questions?, Comments?

Sorry, I have never done the PF tech, so I can not give you a good answer to your questions.

with the PF tek, i would say, it's not really nesccary to use a PC...as long as you sterilize your medium before hand...cook the BRF in the oven at 220 for a 25 minutes or so...just keep it from burning..ditto the verm...but you don't have to worry about that burning. then you mix them up as per usual. sterile teks and then just boil. since you sterilized everything earlier, or tried to, the chances of success are even higher.

My meat thermometer has "Do Not Place In Water" printed on the face of the guage. Not sure why it would hurt, but I'm sure they have a good reason. Or maybe they just want you to purchase a separate thermometer for use in water.??? Hmmmm.

Thats probably referring to the face of the thermometer, not the probe spike. It would be fine as long as you don't immerse the entire thermometer.

ok another varible, how long do the cakes have to be at 200 degrees F since that seems to be the set temp, must they just hit 200 or do they need to stay there for say an hour or so?

Not at 200?F, the boiling temperature of water at sea level is 212?F and this is what you should use. After the water boils, let boil on small flame for 60-90 minutes, longer is better IME. Oh, and make sure to read www.shroomery.org/faq particulary http://www.shroomery.org/index/par/23588
