beginner.. does my cake have the plague?
    #2246570 - 01/16/04 03:42 PM (20 years, 3 months ago)

this is my first time growing and everything seemed to be going well.. that is, until about a week after i removed my first cake and put it into the terrarium.
all was swell, mushrooms started popping up and i thought my first attempt was going to be failure free. but a couple days ago i had spots of dark bluish green on the cake, a couple millimeters small, and it's since been spreading all over. the mushrooms keep coming up and growing, not appearing to be affected by my new blue friend. however, a couple new ones, a day or so old, have caps tinted this color. is this some sort of normal bruising, or is this the death of my first cake?
i've searched through everything i can find about contaminants, but this happened after the cake left its jar and started fruiting. anything i can do? nicolenovak@hotmail.com

Nah its just psilocybin bruising. Its common and natural.

it sounds like typical bluing...but something can't be right with her set up if they're just bluing on their own...i've never seen a cubie just blue just sitting in a terrarium.

A pic would be helpful but like the others say, i looks like it's just bruising mycelium, which is ok.

He's a noob. He's probably touching them every chance he gets. I know I did.

Sounds to me like they are drying up.

I agree with PS, sounds like they need a little misting. Are you keeping your humidity high enough?

now there's a total of 5 cakes, two of which are doing really well, and the rest growing slow.
i think the humidity is if anything too high, i have myc growing up on the mushrooms on a couple cakes; but i don't want to lower it.. tossed one cake already for drying up (had to leave town for a couple days and knew it was going to happen).. so now i'm being extra cautious.. some myc growing up can't kill me, right?
