The Velvet Underground is pretty much the be-all end-all of rock music for me
Nah that is definitely an overstatement, but the VU are a lot more important to me than the Beatles. I wouldn't be surprised a bit if an artist really became as pervasively influential as the Beatles were in their time, but I would be surprised if it was a rock band. Rock music doesn't occupy the same cultural space these days as it did in the 60s and 70s.

Beck is another one that comes to mind. Especially given his sonic diversity.

ModestMouse said: I agree except the whole "if we see an act on par with the influence of the Beatles" First, your wording there makes it difficult to read and properly understand. Truly though, The Beatles weren't the end-all-be-all of music, Velvet Underground was doing great shit with sound too. Then you could argue that The Doors were even more influential prior to all that.
There are a few bands that still create new music which have the potential to be a catalyst for large genre and style movements. Ironically, Modest Mouse is amongst them. The Pixies come to mind as well, they'll be inspiring artists for decades to come.
Saying "oh no one will top the influence of The Beatles until I'm dead" is quite dense. You can't objectify music like that.
I'm not saying the Beatles are the end all be all nor even the best, but none of the bands you mentioned had even come close to the impact the Beatles had on pop-music. I'm just saying there is no way in hell there has been a band more influential than the Beatles, so far and I don't think I'll see a band like that or my grandkids will. Most influential does not mean best or greatest, which they aren't.

True but the Beatles never made anything anywhere near as bad as stereopathic soul manure

Unfortunately it's kind of daunting as an aspiring musician as it seems like no matter how good your music is, it won't matter if you can't "break in" and get a solid amount of people sharing your music. It's easy to fade into obscurity among the masses of would-be musicians. That has always been the case, but the "market" becomes more and more flooded every day.
It's pretty much impossible to be create music that no one has ever heard before. The past century gave us tonsss of brand new genres. Not gonna be a lot of that going on anymore. Scary

I don't listen to music. I listen to podcasts all day and use binaural beats for meditation . I only put music on it hosting a social event. I think it's sort of a disease I have where I don't love music like other people do.
I love dancing though and there is lots of music I love including bass nectar for example but never go out of my way to listen to music.

It's not hard to find good music if you belong to a private torrent tracker. Other what.cd users know what music is good. I just pay attention to what is being downloaded and download that. What's hot right now...

Apollyphelion said: We are living in the most interesting musical times and the most abundant times.
There is nothing in music you cannot try and will be seen as weird. People are now very accepting of the fact that music is about experimentation and finding new sounds. Remember when back in the day, some people were unsure if Ministry was EVEN MUSIC? Remember when people questioned whether rap was music or not? Those days are long gone.
Now, you can sound like a band form the 70's mixed in with elements of modern electronic. You can blend any two or three or four types of music. Everything old is new again. There is a whole genre based around sounding 80's. Some people make 90's sounding stuff on purpose. It is almost as if music is not limited to the time period it is made in any more.
When most people bitch about music being crap these days, they are REALLY just bitching about how HARD it is to find music they fall in love with. Abundance and a much cheaper entry level to making music has contributed to the enormous amount of music out there, which in turn translates to more hours searching for it.
I've always thought though, if we see a band or musical act on par with the influence of the Beatles, in won't happen until I'm a great-great-great Grandfather.
You live in Berlin you have it easy

I confess that I love them. Indeed, it often seems to me that of all the good things in the world, the only ones humanity can claim for itself are stories and music; the rest, mercy, beauty, sleep, clean water and hot food (as the Ascian would have said) are all the work of the Increate. Thus, stories are small things indeed in the scheme of the universe, but it is hard not to love best what is our own—hard for me, at least."

Out of 100 songs, we will LOVE 1 (like absolute classic, a song I may not get bored of until 2-20 years have gone by) About 10 we will really dig, not quite love, but think are awesome and the rest is a combo of we won't hate it but won't listen to it again and stuff that sucks.
That seems like a lot of effort. Last few years I have just downloaded the top few albums on Pitchfork. I prefer to have someone else listen to the shit for me so I don't have to. I don't really have the time to listen to 98 songs I won't like, maybe if I was a music critic getting paid for it or something. I would have to listen to a thousand songs just to have a 10 song playlist I like. That's not really practical.

If I'm not digging the song after 30 seconds to 1 minute, I go to the next. That's also why I love GTA soundtracks, there is a lot of good songs on there. I love exploring art though, so this is not a waste of time for me.

It really annoys me when people say music today sucks, thats so wrong. Music these days is great, you just have to actually care and find it on your own. Pretty much anything on the radio is gonna either be top 40 crap that sucks or its old music that we have all heard a bunch of times before. On soundcloud you can find some great tunes and artists. You have to find it yourself. That music exists
And I love the point the OP made, artists are willing to push limits now unlike back in the day and thats awesome! Theres some really eclectic music out there now
